London July 25 The French ship Metternich an 18000 ton armed merchant vessel used to repatriate officers and men was torpedoed by a German motor boat at 10 30 last night Nearly 1300 aboard the ship flying the French flag were warned to five minutes to leave but the vessel sank in four or five minutes About 1000 men were saved and Germany admits responsibility for the sinking on its official communique referencing the attack off the south coast of England by a speedboat off Portland against a large enemy merchant ship

Bentley Kinney 21 drove his 1935 Ford coach from the club house parking lot at Winchester Golf Club and rolled into the deep end of the swimming pool.
