Park Group Plans Yard Party For Pool

A bogus ten dollar Federal Reserve note was passed at a Winchester tourist home run by Mrs. Belle Fisher on North Braddock Street. A young man staying for the night paid in advance, received change, and disappeared. Police traced leads to Berryville and Harrisonburg before a local mechanic unknowingly tipped him off, prompting his abrupt withdrawal from town.

Battle On Diphtheria Promoted By Winchester Hospital Group

The Junior Auxiliary of Winchester Memorial Hospital with the District Nurses Association and the Medical Association of Winchester sponsors a diphtheria prevention drive in Winchester and Frederick County. The goal is 100 percent immunization for children six months to seven years. Parents who have not had toxoid serum for their children should cooperate and have it administered by their physician or at the Junior Auxiliary clinic. Register at the District Nurses office or the Highland Avenue Chapel annex on Friday or Saturday, July 28 and 29, 3 to 5 p.m. Colored children go to Douglas School the same days. The clinic will be held early in August with inoculations by Medical Association members and trained nurses. The Metropolitan Life Insurance Company notes diphtheria risks and stresses prevention with age-related dangers.

Youth in Berryville Attempts Bold Hold-Up

Alfred Jones eighteen a jockey at a local stable used an old gun barrel to threaten merchant E Eddy Brown during a weekend hold up in Berryville Brown suffered a deep scalp wound eight to ten stitches were needed and Jones was arrested after neighbors pursued him A preliminary hearing is set with possible indictment by Clarke County Grand Jury in September.

40 Hour Weeks Now Operative At Knitting Plant

The Lewis Jones Knitting Company of Winchester began operating under the cotton code with a 40 hour workweek and 80 hours for some machines. W Nelson Page said the change followed a Washington conference with 85 percent of U S knitting firms and aims to raise wages per hour while cutting weekly hours. The code allows 40 hours for sewing and 80 for knitting per week with two shifts, and sets a $12 per week minimum wage for 40 hours.

Indian Boys Fatally Burned in Reservation Fire

Five boys died when a house on the Sarnia Indian reservation two miles south of Sarnia Ontario burned to ashes. They were sons of Tom White and his wife Thippewa Indians. Mrs White saved a two year old daughter.
