British warships and naval aircraft launched a heavy bombardment of Matruh, axis held port on the Egyptian fringe, pounding shore buildings and craft while denying fuel ships access. The operation, described as the heaviest sea strike of the week, aimed to disrupt Axis unloading efforts and potential troop movements.
Mr Winchester notes a hopeful sign in wartime morale as sugar rationing gains acceptance. Reports claim ample supplies and storage issues, with housewives receiving about five times as much sugar for fruit, highlighting unequal distribution.
The Blandy Experimental Farm near Boyce Virginia supports diverse research under Dr. Orland E. White. Dr. E. C. Stuart Sr a popular Winchester physician and surgeon has fully recovered from a recent operation and resumed his general medical and surgical practice. A native of White Post Clarke county he has practiced here over 35 years after moving from Pittsburgh. His son Dr. E. C. Stuart Jr closed his Winchester practice to take military medical duties.
A church benefit at Stephe Church is announced for Thursday July 23 with proceeds aiding the church. The notice notes rain expected the following night.
The local Ration Board announces a final eight day canning sugar registration for Winchester and Frederick county. Applicants must appear at City Hall court room from July 25 to August 1, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., bring narration books and triplicate sugar purchase certificates, and state expected quarts and on hand sugar for canning.
William Hamilton Shafer of Winchester and Frederick De Witt Maphis Jr. of Strasburg passed the Virginia State Board of Medical Examiners exams conducted June 17–20, announced in Richmond by Dr. J W Preston. Shafer, son of local physicians, trained at the University of Virginia and will intern at University Hospital. Maphis is described as banker and churchman.
YARD PARTY at Valley Welltown Church Senn July sessions listed with July 23 at Kernstown Methodist Church on a Thursday. Rain dates noted. Menu includes country ham sandwiches homemade ice cream and cake.
Handley School Board last night elected Stewart Bell chairman to succeed the late John M. Steck. The opening date for the 1942 43 session was set for September 8. Bell has served since 1915 and led the Finance Committee. He is active in Winchester business and regional organizations. Labor debate on apple harvesting labor was postponed pending a closer view of the issue. Other board members present included Dr. Hunter McGuire vice chairman and several residents. Common Council vacancy remains unfilled.
In Sugar Land and Houston Texas the Imperial sugar refinery shows vast stockpiles over 60 million pounds. Vice president H G Thompson cites rationing as the cause and notes the plant runs five days a week producing 1 3 million pounds daily on two shifts. He warns layoffs may come if shutdown continues while urging higher ration allotments.
The bulletin notes North Fork and South Fork rivers are very low with clear water conditions at Riverton.
Robert B. Dechert, office manager of the Winchester Woolen Company, was named supervisor of posts for the U S Army Air Corps Aircraft Warning Service in Winchester Virginia. He will oversee Posts 21 H 21 E and the White Hall post and has lived in Winchester nine years after moving from New York. He is married to Mary K Quick and has two sons Dan and William.
American pilots and Negro troops arrived in Northern Ireland as part of U S invasion forces. They include air force maintenance crews and are led by a 40 year old colonel who praised their quality. The group mingled with British forces and studied British planes eager to fly at once.
Baroness Marxov spoke to Lions Club members sharing observations from Europe. She has spent years in central Europe with her husband and is visiting this area for a few days.
The heat wave ends as rain cools conditions from a peak near 96 degrees to 74. A light shower total around 0.26 inches helps temper the brief spell of extreme warmth. Local officials warned residents to stay hydrated and avoid outdoor exertion during the hottest hours.

In Boyce Virginia the Patrons League launches a year round low cost lunch program for over 400 students in the new high school. Members have gathered 245 half gallon jars of vegetables and 30 gallons of kraut from community gardens to supply the meals, with cooperation from patrons and non patrons alike. The lunches will cost six cents per day per student and will use the new school's kitchen and stores.
The automobile of A. C. Halvosa was found abandoned in Clarke County after being stolen from in front of his home on Valley Avenue. It was stripped of five tires and other items including tail light, stop light, gas tank top, rubber mat, flashlight, first aid kit, fishing tackle, dark glasses, and more.
Russian forces clash with German troops on both banks of the Don as the Red Army seeks to clear the last bridgeheads between the river and Voronezh. Moscow reports heavy German losses daily and German claims of Rostov and Stalingrad movements.
