Fairfax county officers quelled a two hour riot at a Virginia state prison camp near Fairfax. More than 100 officers restored order as inmates set mattresses ablaze and 70 were moved to other jails. No serious injuries reported and damage estimated at 1500 to 2000 dollars. The disturbance followed a solitary confinement dispute.
Tokyo AP reports disastrous weekend rains in central and western Japan cause floods and landslides. At least 106 dead and 31 missing, 24,000 homeless, 219 injured. Rainfall ranged 5 to 13 inches along the coast, with Shimane prefecture most affected.
A volunteer firefighter who helped tackle a Mt Willings Rd blaze was unexpectedly summoned away from a Sundayoff outing while a spectator noted he wore an insulated coat over his bathing trunks. A second item reports a carnival at 348 Shawnee Ave run by Washington TV sponsors to raise funds for muscular dystrophy research.
Communist guerrillas killed 40 civilians and 12 military defenders in Cai Be, 50 miles southwest of Saigon. Among the dead were 23 women and children. The raid followed a Sunday assault on a military post 30 miles farther southwest in which most of the 130 defenders were captured.
Congress reconvenes amid partisan tensions to push major bills for Johnson’s program. Senate leaders aim to clear pay reform for federal workers and retiree/ military pay scales, plus a foreign aid package, antipoverty funds, and highway programs. Viet Cong attacked Cai Be, burning homes, wounding civilians and guards as U.S. advisors assessed the devastation.
Barry Goldwater moves to mobilize a campaign team for a series of Washington and Phoenix based rallies. He plans a California interior valley whistle stop lasting about a week and aims to organize a citizen committee to win over Democrats and unaffiliated voters. A Harlem violence flare up over the fatal shooting of a Black teen by a white officer left one man dead and over 100 injured, including 24 police. Looting, broken windows, and gunfire marked the unrest as crowds clashed with police in the 57 block center of Harlem.
London reported that British papers warned Harlem violence threatens the United States and could boost Senator Barry Goldwater’s White House bid. They cited daily flareups and fear among responsible Black leaders as political consequences loom.
A four person Allgeier family perished in a head on collision on U S Rt 22 about 16 miles north of town. Another four people were injured including 18 year old Linda Metzner and George Williams. Donald R Metzner 20, a seaman from Chesterton Indiana, died in the crash. The wreck pushed Frederick County toll to 13 for the year.
A small low pressure center moves across Virginia bringing considerable cloudiness and widely scattered showers. Warmer temperatures and high humidity are expected today.
