Across the nation an extreme heat wave bakes the region with temperatures reaching 117 in the Mojave Desert and 112 near Phoenix. Rail lines buckle and 16 freight cars derail in Kentucky while Marines in California are evacuated from heat distress.
Virginia faces another scorcher with highs near 90 to 100 and Roanoke tying a July record at 102. Richmond matches 1942 July 18 high of 101 as farmers report drought impacts and cattle sales rise amid drying conditions. Virginia Tech officials foresee potential strong tobacco yields if rain returns.
Israeli Prime Minister Begin arrives in Washington for two day talks with President Carter amid hopes for peace but deep rifts on land and Palestinian issues. Begin seeks a complete peace plan and over $2 billion aid. he favors direct negotiations and potential autonomy for West Bank Arabs.
The George Washington Hotel at Piccadilly and Cameron Streets in Winchester, built in the 1920s, once a hub for balls and private gatherings, declined in the 1960s with I-81 and new motels. Ownership shifted to Piccadilly Cameron Corp and Liberty Homes, which now run the George Washington Home for Adults.
