Claude H. Ryan, son of Mrs Nettie Ryan of North Washington street, has been promoted from chief boatswain mate to ensign in the United States Navy. A Winchester man, he has served about fifteen years and could soon advance to lieutenant. He was notified recently and spent time with his mother before traveling to Washington for new uniforms.
An earthquake was recorded at Georgetown University today centered about 2,500 miles from Washington. Shocks lasted from 6.42 to 8.50 a m. Mrs Thurman Adams of Martins, West Virginia, has been visiting Mr and Mrs A P Holland at Gainesboro.

Mrs John Wood of West Preca Chicago reports her son Lawrence Wood has enlisted in the Navy and is assigned to the Great Training School near Chicago. He was previously rejected due to a technical physical disability but was accepted as the war began and has now joined the service.

A county draft board released a list of forty two men to depart for Camp Lee on July 18 under Class LA. The Win chester quota is exhausted with most listed as young farmers previously deferred for agricultural work. An additional ten men were called to fill deficiencies and a further forty are requested, but Class 1 has been exhausted. Reclassified papers must be reviewed by the district exemption board in Roanoke by July 18, delaying immediate dispatch.
