A Winchester and Frederick county plan titled One Hour A Week aims to raise 60000 for war aid over a year. The campaign runs July 22 to 27 with expenses covered by the organizing group, urging every wage earner to contribute one hour of pay weekly.
The Star reports U S forces announce 43 American expeditionary casualties including 15 killed in action 2 died of wounds 5 died from disease 1 died in an airplane accident 9a died of other causes and 17 wounded with 2 missing. Lieut Stephen T McGroranty of Falls Church Va died of wounds and Private John B Merrick of Ports Va listed under died from accident. In the Marines 114 total casualties include 6 killed in action 23 severely wounded 52 wounded 18 missing and Private Oswald J Martin of Gainesville Va wounded and Private Sidney Carter of Vienna Va missing.
On motion by Claude M Showalter Judge Whiting in the Corporation Court appoints him administrator of his father A J Showalter estate. A J Showalter died in this city several weeks ago.
Washington reports the Provost Marshal General rules that motion picture actors and other skilled personnel needed to produce and present films are not affected by the work or fight order. The ruling clarifies exemptions for those in the film industry.
An ad offers Northern Virginia Power Company bonds at 500 and 1000 dollar denominations. Interest paid semi annually, with total bonded debt at one quarter of plant value. Hanson. & Carter advertise investments with insurance and real estate guidance. Also notices include a beagle pup reward, a house for sale, and 25 shares Union Bank stock.
At a county supervisors meeting, the board voted to continue the Office of Superintendent of Roads for the fiscal year to Jan 31 1919 with a salary of $100 and state aid of $200 toward pay. A J Tavenner currently holds the post and will remain in charge amid labor shortages.
Community event announced for Greenway Church on July 20 from 4 to 5 and 2 to 2. Attendees invited to join outdoor gathering with music and refreshments.
The board proposes building a bridge over Back Creek on the North Frederick pike and will apply for state aid to fund the project.
In the Circuit Court of Frederick County Mrs. Margaret L. Lewis was granted an absolute divorce from James B. Lewis on grounds of desertion. A partial divorce had been awarded April 10, 1915, now made final. Each party retains the right to remarry if they wish.
A pile of waste paper ignited in Indiah al ley near Piccadilly street caused excitement as flames spread to a storage house owned by Mrs Franck Baker before firemen arrived with chemicals and controlled the blaze.
The Senate approved a resolution urging the President to issue a proclamation calling on Americans to observe noon prayer during the war. It goes to the House. Senator Phelan read a letter from Secretary Tumulty noting the President's hesitation about the noon prayer proposal.
A reader notes John Esten Cooke's Little Stories of Virginia and Virginia natives. It recalls his 1870s work from The Briar and the dedication to his sons. The column references War Relief activities and a Clarke County library table discussion.
The document announces a new dog law effective June 21 1918 requiring dog owners to register their dogs at the office for 1919 taxes. Dogs under six months old are exempt until they reach six months of age.
John William Clevenger an 18 year old youth on the George J. Pitzer farm near Rest was gored by an enraged bull. He was pinned against a barn wall then repeatedly gored about the stomach and chest. He was found by Mrs. Hugh Lupton and taken for medical care at Winchester Memorial Hospital.
The Golden Rule Bible Class on South Braddock Street lists weekly topics and speakers from July 7 to August 26. Subjects include Christian Democracy, The Bible in the Twentieth Century, and How to Pray, with speakers Prof. Leslie D. Kine Dr. C. Yost Rev. F. M. Richardson and others. All are invited to attend each service.

Mr. M. M. Lynch a prominent attorney has been appointed commissioner in chancery and auditor to examine the books and records of Winchester’s Corporation Court by Judge Whiting. He fills the posts left vacant by Russell Cather who serves in the army at Petersburg.
Former New York mayor John Purroy Mitchel was killed when his scout plane crashed at Gertsner aviation field in New Orleans. War officials and friends mourned the loss, noting his expertise and expected overseas service.

Frank Fansler from Utah and Arthur Fansler visit their parents Mr. and Mrs. L. L Mansler on West Leicester street during furloughs from New York and Philadelphia respectively. A partial ad mentions a house for sale at 450 dollars and a liberal reward notice at Star Office.
