A SBA representative will offer loan information at Reuss City Hall Council Chambers rather than the Emergency Disaster Center in Manassas. No one is turned away, and the Sims office reports over 40 residents visiting for details plus 26 who completed disaster inquiry records.
Democratic forces urge Chief Justice Burger to convene a special session over contested California and Illinois delegates. McGovern gains 151 California delegates. Daley camp seeks federal court seating for 59 uncommitted Illinois delegates amid party rule disputes. Court action pending, no schedule set.
In WAVERLY Minnesota Senator Hubert H. Humphrey suggests Alabama Governor George Wallace would be an active spokesman and likely support him if Humphrey is the Democratic nominee. He notes possible Wallace backing for Henry Jackson and possibly Edmund Muskie, but not George McGovern, and says Wallace could stay in the party even if McGovern gains the nomination.
Clarke County closed the year with a 402 658 surplus, nearly double last year's 237 319, allowing a larger budget at the same tax rate. Much of the funds will cover the Boyce School renovation at 140 000, with cash on hand to pay bills until taxes arrive. The board also noted 432 000 in county road funds, prioritizing construction and maintenance across 205 miles of roads.
The Winchester Evening Star will receive the runner-up award for special sections and honorable mention for general make-up at the Virginia Press Association annual meeting on July 15. The Free-Lance Star of Fredericksburg won first for front page. Daily News-Record Harrisonburg also earned first for press work and an honorable mention for general make-up. Shenandoah Herald Woodstock won first for press work and runner-up for general make-up among weekly papers under 3,000 circulation. Loudoun Times-Mirror Leesburg and Page News and Courier Luray earned top press work honors for weekly papers over 5,000 circulation with runner up or first placements. Page News and Courier also cited for front page work.
U S Navy fighter bombers pounded bunkers south of Quang Tri City to open a route for South Vietnamese paratroopers advancing on the provincial capital. About 180 NVA were reported killed around Quang Tri with 10 South Vietnamese dead and 90 wounded. Further fighting near the Cambodian border yielded 208 NVA killed and 45 weapons captured.
Arlington National Cemetery will build a $15 000 tomb for a Vietnam unknown dead this fall though none are unidentified. If none are found the tomb may be unused. The pink marble crypt will sit with other unknowns near World War II and Korean War graves and the World War I unknown soldier tomb.
FBI agents boarded the Pacific Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 during a six hour hijack, killed two hijackers in a gun battle while passengers were aboard, a passenger died, and three were wounded. The hijackers demanded ransom and departure to Siberia, with two parachutes and $800,000.
The James, York, and Appomattox rivers may rise to near flood levels as heavy rains push water levels just above or below flood stage. Forecasts show James River about one foot above flood stage at several sites, Appomattox cresting at 18 to 19 feet near Farmville, with readings in Richmond crews noting over 2 inches of rain in the region.
Members of the Virginia Rural Letter Carriers Association and its Ladies Auxiliary begin a three day convention at the Quality Motel East in Winchester. Vice Mayor Stewart Bell Jr will give the welcome at 7 30 tonight. A morning session and banquet follow, with officers elected to close the event Saturday.
