Hoover to veto unemployment relief bill new session urged
President Hoover faces likely veto of the 2.1 billion unemployment relief package after House and Senate conferees approve the measure. Senator Watson says Hoover will demand Congress stay in session until a new bill passes, signaling little chance of this week’s adjournment. The administration reportedly opposes the 200 million loan to states and may veto that provision more than the 325 million for public works.

Counties Pay Big for Administration in 1930 Virginia
Richmond reports figures from the State Tax Department show county disbursements for financial administration totaled 1,207,215.50 dollars in 1930, 4.09 percent of all government costs. Counties spent 51.77 percent of total outlays on local education, 29.9 percent on roads, and 3.11 percent on general debt, with real estate taxes providing about a third of local levies. Local costs are expected to fall in 1931 as economies take hold and levies drop by roughly 700 thousand to 800 thousand dollars.
