Roosevelt departs Albany by air to announce acceptance as Democratic presidential nominee. Garner named as running mate with Roosevelts party allies confirming acceptance from Washington. Al Smith absent, fate of Roosevelt Garner ticket unsettled among factions.
Roosevelt won the Democratic nomination at Chicago on the first ballot with 945 of 1154 votes after states swung to his side. John Garner was chosen as running mate, while Alfred E. Smith’s stance remained uncertain and party leaders urged harmony for the campaign. Roosevelt planned to address delegates and begin the general election effort.

Betty Cover aged 80 died at her niece Mrs Frank Strunk’s Takoma Park home after a long illness. Born April 1 1852 in Mountain Falls Frederick County she was the last of her immediate family. A longtime Winchester resident she attended Memorial Hospital and was active in Presbyterian church auxiliaries and charity work.
T J Smallwood proprietor of a Berryville filling station was held for Clarke County Circuit Court grand jury on a charge he shot at a car wounding 16 year old Helen Stuart of Boyce. He said he fired to deter gasoline tampering and released on his own recognizance until July 25 term.
