Virginia Court redraws House districts in one man one vote ruling

A four judge panel redrew Virginia House of Delegates districts to align with the one man one vote standard, shifting borders and ordering Norfolk to elect three state senators at large. The ruling split or moved several districts and may prompt a quick return of the General Assembly to finish reapportionment. Filing deadlines for the Sept 14 primary shift to July 16.

Crash in Clarke Claims 2d Victim

A Thursday evening two car crash on Route 340 near Berryville left Lidune Brey dead at the scene and Gary Brey dying later in Winchester hospital. The incident is Clarke County's fifth and sixth traffic fatalities of the year with three others injured including Betty Fields, Carl Anderson, and Carla Fields.

Ky Sees No Obstacles In New Peace Proposal

In Saigon Vice President Nguyen Cao Ky said there are no obstacles on the South Vietnamese side to a Viet Cong plan for a total U.S. troop withdrawal by year end. President Thieu said Washington and Saigon must discuss the timetable together, with Kissinger and Abrams meeting officials to map troop pullouts as part of Indochina policy reviews.

Hijacked Jet Takes Off for Buenos Aires

A Braniff 707 hijacked Friday over Mexico landed at Galeao Airport in Rio de Janeiro guarded by police and flew again at 10 25 a.m. for Buenos Aires after freeing 100 passengers and three crew. The hijackers Robert Lee Jackson and Ligia Lucrecia Sanchez Archila demanded ransom of 100000 and claimed explosives.

Success Followed Long, Hard Climb

The Winchester Star began on July 4, 1896, facing a tough launch amid rival papers. Founders John Sloat, W B Garton, and John Hoover navigated near bankruptcy and consolidation, with Sloat serving as editor and manager and S.H. Hansbrough becoming publisher president of The Star Publishing Company.

Star commemorates 75th anniversary with special supplement

A special eight page supplement in today’s edition reprints The Star’s July 8, 1896 fourth edition in full and includes four pages of side by side department photos from 25 years ago and today. The 1946 photos belong to Mrs. Ralph S. Fansler while stains on the 1896 pages match the original copy owned by Lewis H. Ebert. Ebert’s great uncle was J. I. Sloat, The Star’s first editor.

Fourth of July Celebrations Spark Winchester Events
