Adolf Hitler addresses the Reichstag with renewed claims of popular support and a vow to aid Germany's problems. He asserts he comes from the people and expresses supreme faith in them, renewing his drive for colonial expansion.
Berlin reports Adolf Hitler stated that defensive armaments must match dangers facing Germany. He said each nation sets its own armament limit and that Britain decides its needed defense while Germany reserves its own defense estimates for the German people to Berlin.
In a Reichstag address dated January 30 1939 Adolf Hitler proclaims Germany’s “loyal cooperation” and renounces isolation. He asserts sovereignty over military and railways, pledges restoration of colonies, and hints at possible arrangements with Portugal while leaving Angola aside. The speech marks a defiant pivot on Versailles and a protest against German guilt.
MA Winchester reflects on the nation’s worst flood, its months of hardship, and the costly rebuilding ahead. He notes similarities to Louisville’s flood and emphasizes that the value of human life dwarfs financial loss and sorrow of separated families.

General Motors president Alfred P. Sloan Jr and Secretary Perkins failed to reach a truce with United Automobile Workers amid a month-old strike. Reports say Sloan may have been advised not to negotiate while sit-downs continue in Flint. Other unions consider settlements or contingencies as industry wide tension rises.
The Friendship Fire Company pumper reconditioned at over five thousand dollars arrived from Elmira New York. It will be unloaded when American LaFrance representative arrives to install the new motor and mechanical parts. The truck includes new windows and steering gear and will be among the latest in Virginia.
Frances Finkle, 20, was served a warrant in her hospital room charging her with attempting to murder her mother, Mrs. Sarah Finkle, in a mercy killing. Both women were reportedly recovering from opiate overdoses in separate Boston hospitals.
Henderson Ky Jan 30 Leigh Harris chairman of the local Red Cross chapter protested reports that the city is under water. Harris said it has not been touched by the flood and has been a refuge for flood sufferers.
Letcher Larrick of near this city was found guilty before Trial Justice A J Tavenner. He received a $100 fine plus costs and 30 days in jail. His driving permit was revoked automatically.
Winter's fiercest weather lashed Europe with high seas and gales from the North Sea to the Baltic coast. At least 74 lives were lost as ships struggled and rivers overflowed in France. Five ships trapped by ice issued distress signals while Fair Isle residents faced shortages and rationing. German planes airlifted food to islanders including 100 schoolchildren on Spiekeroog. La Pointe near Bordeaux saw waves batter the Atlantic coast village.
In Tiptonville Tennessee a slight earthquake tremor near 3 am disturbed the Mississippi flood fight as 115000 workers with shovels and sandbags held levees against a super flood. Police said the tremor lasted a few seconds with no damage and levees remaining above town per the engineer’s check. Prof MacElwane of St Louis University noted a very slight movement at 2:13 am.
Flood victims in eastern Arkansas face profiteering as buyers pay as little as five cents for chickens and one dollar for cows and mules. May or Cecil Shane urges farmers to resist profiteers while Red Cross warns relief will not cover livestock losses. Sheriff Stacy reports “river rats” looting homes and barns in lowlands as property is stolen from highways after being unloaded.
The Senate appropriations committee reported a $900 million deficiency bill with $700 million for relief and flood rehabilitation. It funds the WPA to July 1 with $655 million and CCC at $95 million. The Red Cross said $6.417 million was donated toward a $10 million flood relief goal.
Ohio river levels eased from Pittsburgh toward Marietta and down to dam 46 Owensboro Kentucky while Evansville Indiana reports 53.6 feet far above flood stage. Cairo Illinois at 58.8 feet remains well over flood stage as the Mississippi runs high from Memphis to Vicksburg and low near New Orleans.
Huntington and towns along the 200 mile riverbank clear mud and debris after floodwaters recede. Real estate losses in Huntington could reach two million dollars as the state health department dispatches anti typhoid vaccine and says epidemics are unlikely.
