Red Army units west of Novga moved about 20 miles from the Leningrad-Pskov railway as they pushed across difficult country toward the last supply artery for German forces. The push followed Soviet lines severing the Leningrad-Moscow route and threatening Staraya Russa, with Russian forces close to the Estonian border and the Leningrad-Vitebsk line largely under Soviet control.
Senators prepare to cry filibuster if no vote starts Monday on the federal war ballot plan for armed forces. The bill enters a second week with no test votes as amendments seek to eliminate or limit the proposal amid party battles over the fourth term issue and ballot wording.

Frances Long reports from New York that J B Powell, former editor of the China Weekly Review and prisoner in Shanghai, says Japanese guards tortured at least six American airmen including Jimmy Doolittle’s men before executing some. Powell, who has survived concentration camp ordeals, provided the account.
William Allen White editor of the Emporia Gazette known as the Sage of Emporia died at 4 15 a m in Kansas after a long illness. His wife Mrs White had worked with him for nearly fifty years and the editor had recently published his last piece titled The New Baby about a new link for the Gazette.
Washington officials weighed the impact of publishing the Philippine atrocity report. The debate pitted the armed services and OWI against secrecy concerns as more wartime disclosures loom.

London newspapers unite in demanding harsh retaliation against Japan after reports of prisoner mistreatment. The Daily Express and News Chronicle insist Britain will use full military power against Japan once Germany is defeated, while other papers call Japan a savage nation and urge isolation.

Advanced Allied air forces based in New Guinea report heavy destruction on key enemy positions in New Britain after raids on Rabaul. More than 50 bombers struck low level to wreck airfield systems while over 60 Allied fighters provided cover as Japan faced choices to hide planes or engage.
The President's Birthday Ball at the Armory boosted the local Infantile Paralysis Drive funds. Between 200 and 250 couples attended the dance, about 100 service men also joined. Music by the U S Navy School of Music included The Winchester Hop. Plans floated to host a War Bond dance on February 22 with the same band.
