Tokyo denies a Washington report that a truce has been signed and notes fighting of a desperate character continues. London press expresses deep anxiety as some supporters of Japan call for joint action between America and Great Britain.
Reports from Shanghai say a truce premised on an armistice failed and fighting continued as Chinese and Japanese forces clashed. The Chapei district burned, with hundreds killed or wounded as air raids and street fires raged. international mediation and Allied interest grew amid rising global tension.
The firemen's relief bill is introduced in the House of Delegates in Richmond with Senator Layman ready in the Senate. It would levy a small tax on Virginia fire insurance business to fund aid for disabled and indigent firefighters and urges widespread public letters to lawmakers.
Beginning Monday February 1 a double series of young people meetings will be held in Winchester. Sponsored by the Christian Endeavor Union and the Frederick Union these simultaneous services were planned independently. The Ministerial Association designates next week as Young People Church Week to urge attendance by all youths and support from adults. Evening services at 7 30 will be held at Centenary Reformed Church Church of Christ and First Presbyterian with continued coverage on page five.
A badly armed Japanese bomb hit the west end of the settlement causing a major fire and widespread fear. Firefighters fought the blaze as 2,000 more Japanese troops were reportedly en route to reinforce 2,000 marines in Chapei. Casualties for Shanghai fighting cited: 2 officers and 7 sailors killed, 28 serious wounded, 19 others injured. Chinese losses totaled 300 with four Japanese armored cars captured.
Morgan Larrick a Frederick county farmer has left all real and personal property to his wife Mrs Mary Bell Larrick with one share due to his daughter Olive Pauline Hawkins. The wife is executrix and posts a $200 bond without surety. Debts and tombstone costs are paid from estate with funds on deposit in a local bank. Witnesses Strother Sherman Clayton Sherman and Cinton Larrick.
The Senate finance committee decided not to press a general veterans relief bill this session. The AP reports the decision came on January 29 as part of budget and policy considerations in Washington.
Judge Philip Williams sentences four defendants after guilty pleas in Corporation Court. Hunter Brown receives 2 years 4 months in the state penitentiary for forgery. Joseph Carpenter gets two years for forgery. Curtis Hutton receives one year for a statutory offense involving a 16 year old. Charles Lewis is fined five dollars and ordered to 12 months in jail for theft at Mace's Store on South Braddock Street. The piece closes with a commentary on script payments and public skepticism.

Fleet may be assigned counsel if he does not secure one.
Bettie M. Long 59 wife of Alexander Long of Yellow Springs West Virginia died suddenly of a brain hemorrhage while alone at home. Neighbors found her on a couch between 1 30 and 2 PM and a physician confirmed death. She leaves two sons Cecil S. Long and David H. Long both of Yellow Springs three sisters and one brother. Funeral Sunday at the Christian Church Timber Ridge with services by Rev Cartney H. Anderson. Interment in the church cemetery.
Associated Press reports Martin Sitar his wife and five children were stabbed to death in Elma Manitoba by an unknown assailant who also set a house fire. Two more Sitar children survived in critical condition rescued by their uncle John Sitar.
In Richmond on January 29 the House rejected an economy bill proposing a 10 percent salary cut for General Assembly members. Debate highlighted highway funding fights as lawmakers discussed diverting automobile license tax revenue to schools, aiming to ease road maintenance costs while preserving highway funds.
