North Vietnamese gunners shelled the Khe Sanh Marine base as 3 500 Army troops were flown to the northern front to bolster Leathernecks. The move followed a self declared Viet Cong lunar new year cease fire and amid fears of a major North Vietnamese offensive.
An 18 hour Prayer Vigil starts at 1 p m as a prelude to the Winchester Preaching Mission sponsored by the Winchester Frederick County Ministerial Association. Dr George M Docherty of Washington D C will preach at Market Street Methodist Church nightly at 7 30 with related events through Friday.
Annual Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival departmental meeting set for Monday at 8 p.m. at Frank Armstrong II’s home 416 Briarmont Drive. Fifteen departments will send directors and committee chairs to hear brief reports and outline plans for the coming fete. Festival executives will attend and coordinate upcoming activities.

Senate committees advanced liquor by the drink and a tax timing windfall measure while hearings debated highway, banking, insurance, and education reforms across the session.

Miss Ann L. Riggleman of Fort Ashby West Virginia has been named executive director of the Shawnee Girl Scout Council Inc. The announcement from council president F Allan Weatherholt notes her background in teaching and 4 H Club work. She succeeds Mrs Natalie Dorsey of Romney who resigned in December. Riggleman began her duties on January 15.
