Betty Tharpe Wins Bland Musical Contest at Clarke High
Betty Tharpe a 10th grader at Clarke County High School won first place in the James Bland Memorial Musical Scholarship tryouts held Thursday night in the school auditorium. The Lions Club sponsored event followed the county Lions Club Ladies Night dinner and Wade Muldon was general chairman. Tharpe daughter of Hiram and Mrs. Tharpe of Berryville rosemont Circle will advance to the Zone Contest to be announced soon. Second place went to Madeline Ramsburg 8th grade daughter of Oscar and Mrs. Ramsburg of Berryville for a piano piece and Ralph Alger 10th grade son of Everett and Mrs. Alger of Milwood sang Without a Song.

A lone bandit robbed The Stockmans Bank in Harman West Virginia of about $9,000 then locked two employees in the vault. The suspect wore blue denim and an Army field jacket. State police set roadblocks across several towns and alerted neighboring states.

46th Death on Virginia Roads in Augusta County Crash
A three vehicle pileup on U S 11 in Augusta County late last night caused Virginia's 46th highway death of the year. Stanley Mack of Verona, a passenger in a vehicle driven by Thomas Morgan of Staunton, died instantly in the crash at 11 05 p m one and a half miles south of Verona.

Sailors Involved In Car Crash North Of Winchester
Four people were injured in area traffic incidents today including three sailors in a north of Winchester crash on U S Route 22 when a car slid off a snowy highway. A 9-year-old Winchester boy was slightly hurt in a bicycle collision at Hart and Pall Mall streets. A runaway truck struck two parked autos causing over 700 dollars in damage. The Navy men were aboard a Studebaker driven by Joseph Tramontana. Weather: less than an inch of snow, slick roads, sun out by afternoon, temperatures around 48 degrees.

H K Benham of the George Washington Hotel Corporation announced the Jack Hotel property had been sold to the Shenandoah Valley National Bank and hotel operations would be discontinued soon. Harold G Brown of the bank said the property would aid expansion and improvement of bank facilities serving the community. The Jack Hotel opened in 1914 and was later acquired by the George Washington Hotel Corporation in 1925, remaining a hotel serving commercial men and tourists in Winchester and the Shenandoah region.

Fire at the Will Taylor place near Poor House and Indian Hollow Roads destroyed a five room frame house known as the Yeakley School. Eight people lived there including Mr. and Mrs. George Sheppard and three children, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Newsome, and Maynard Beatty. Fire started around 9 am, spreading from wallpaper near a flue. Two alarms were sounded. Round Hill and Shawnee volunteers fought the blaze, saving outbuildings. A severely burned child from the home was to be hospitalized for burns.
