Washington on January 19 the proposal from Senators Flanders and Javits and other Republicans would authorize the Truman administration to set up a meat rationing program and provide up to 1 million dollars for Agriculture Department preparations. Undersheriff C H Van Pelt credited with capturing two men after the Kremmling Colorado bank robbery that netted 21474 dollars in cash. Virginia Budget Tops Half Billion For 1948-50 Session
Virginia sends a general assembly budget totaling 504,995,051 for 1948-50, an increase of 161,306,000 over 1946-48. Gov. Tuck’s recommendation allocates 156,785,427 from the general fund with 21,700,000 from a tax hike, and 348,209,624 from special funds. Recurring items rise in both funds, while requests are trimmed by about 100 million in the general fund and 6.58 million in special funds. The plan expects a general fund surplus of 20,310,715 next June 30, plus 121,855,330 from present sources, for a total general fund of 142,497,995. The budget emphasizes expansion of state activities including Alcoholic Beverage control, dormitories, dining halls, and public welfare programs. This balance with federal aid and retirement payments is projected to produce over 241 million from non-tax sources, comprising nearly 47 percent of total outlays and about 58 percent of the increase over 1946-48.
