Stolen Safe Found East of Winchester After Break-In

A safe stolen from Strasburg Motor Co. last night was found over an embankment four miles east of Winchester. It contained about 500 dollars in cash and 1400 to 1500 dollars in checks. the door was forced and records, including car titles, were scattered. Sheriff DeHaven and officers found the 400 pound safe with witnesses noting the location and ownership.

The Virginia Travel Council predicts out of state passenger travel into Virginia will exceed all prior records this year with an income surpassing 300 million dollars by 1951. They cite a 13.3 percent rise in foreign passenger car travel and expect visits by various groups to nearly double, while advertising by private business grows.

Chiang Accuses Russian Advisers of aiding Chusan assault

In Formosa the Nationalist defense ministry said a Russian advisory group aided Chinese communists preparing to seize the Chusan islands. Four Russian officers were said to be attached to each red division as Nationalist bombers raided invasion craft and attacked targets along the Shanghai area.

Court declines review in Goochland church case

The Virginia Supreme Court refused to hear Thomas C. Hopkins case claiming he was expelled from Emm as Baptist Church in Goochland County without congregational authority. Hopkins argued two members acted without the congregation and others were warned not to allow him to preach. The court also agreed to review a separate breach of contract appeal from Loudoun County involving W N Hall and Katherine MacLeod plus Colin MacLeod.

Frederick County consolidates five high schools into James Wood

More than 700 pupils will attend class at the new James Wood high school near Winchester starting September. The 61 percent complete building, costing over a million dollars, will replace five existing high schools and house 32 to 35 teachers with 28 regular classrooms and multiple specialty rooms.

Plan Fire Tower For N. Mountain

The Virginia Forest Service will erect an 80 foot steel fire tower on Big North mountain in Frederick County. Thomas B. Rosenberger said clearing a telephone right of way and building a road will precede erection. The tower, two miles from Route 600 and three miles south of Route 50 at Hayfield, will be manned by a paid warden in spring and fall to spot fires quickly. School board and Frederick County supervisors met to outline probable operating costs for the 1950-51 term. Prisoners Fatally Beat Sheriff and Escape on Trail

Two handcuffed inmates Everett Charles Pitts and Willis Eugene Thomas attacked Sheriff E. E. Marlow as he halted to transfer them near Woodstock. They fled on foot, pursued by Shenandoah and Warren county officers with bloodhounds from a prison camp.
