Frederick County Agriculture Board Names ten committees for 1950

The Frederick County Agriculture Board executive committee has named 43 members to ten committees guiding farm social and other county activities in 1950. The Rural Youth committee met with W W Eure to discuss organizing clubs. Committees include Agronomy Livestock Poultry Dairy Rural Youth Rural Housing Cooperatives Public affairs and more, aiming to develop ongoing programs for farm people.

Meade Connection to Everard Meade Estate History

Local history traces the Everard Meade line from Philip Grymes Randolph owning part of the Millwood Mill property via inheritance from Col. Nathaniel Burwell. Through exchanges and sales from 1829 to 1926 the land changes hands, ending with the River House sale to George C. Meade in 1926 and later divisions among Bowles and Nichols. A side note lists a cut-rate store ad and a flower shop notice with a county board meeting on February 3 1950.

Sun Oil Co Faces Anti trust Action

The Justice Department filed civil anti trust charges against Sun Oil Co of Philadelphia over exclusive purchasing contracts with about 10 000 independent service station operators in 18 states and the District of Columbia Sunoco products are involved and the suit seeks to cancel contracts and bar coercive practices Sun manufactures some products but buys others from various suppliers and operates fewer than 50 stations in the affected areas

Miss M. M Vicar Dies at 68 in Winchester Hospital

Margaret McVicar aged 68 died at Winchester hospital after illness. She was a Baptist church member and former cashier at the Capitol restaurant. Survivors include cousins C. P. McVicar and Walter Huntsberry. Funeral at 2 p m Saturday at First Baptist Church.

Diesel Makes Run Over Winchester and Western Line

An $87,500 Lima-Hamilton diesel locomotive demonstrated on the Winchester and Western line, with J. G. Fosbrink noting it could enter service about a year from purchase. The 1000 to 1250 horsepower engine could replace one of two steam locomotives, weighing 120 tons.

Winchester Chamber Directors Aid War Memorial Plan

Winchester chamber of commerce directors will appoint a committee to monitor the proposed war memorial and work with project leaders this year. They aim to advance the memorial along with traffic safety, county cooperation, a Halloween program in October, and a Spend Dollars in Winchester effort. Executive secretary Gene Lakers said further projects are under consideration and 1949 programs will continue, including National Apple Week and a Christmas decorating contest. A 425 member goal is set for 1950.

Russia Presses Claim to Chinese Territories Says Acheson

Secretary of State Acheson said Russia is annexing northern Chinese provinces and attaching them to the Soviet Union. He warned the United States must guard Asiatic independence and prevent Russian encroachment while noting Manchuria and Outer Mongolia moves. He also challenged Taft on Formosa aid and warned against foolish adventures in the Far East.

Five Planes Carry 12 to Miami Air Show

Five planes carrying 12 Winchester citizens including Mayor M. B. Clowe and Councilman J. Lee Miller left Winchester airport this morning for the Miami Air Maneuvers. The formation planned stops at Rocky Mount Florence Savannah Jacksonville and Miami with Jacksonville to be reached tonight and a return flight Monday.

Local Group Tours Pennsylvania Farm Show

A Winchester led group from Frederick Clarke counties traveled by chartered bus to the Pennsylvania State Farm Show in Harrisburg yesterday. They arrived at 9:30 and stayed until 10:30 p.m. viewing farm equipment, livestock, and exhibits. A Belgian heavy horses team set a new horse pulling record at 24.5 tons, beating the old 24.4 ton mark.

Arson Suspected in Slayings Found in Hammond Fire

Six people died in a blaze on Hammond Indiana's southeast side. Police found blood in bedrooms, butcher knives, and empty rifle shells, suggesting arson was used to cover up a multiple murder. Four bodies were identified.

Clearbrook Fire Co to Sign On For 1950 Festival Parades

Clearbrook Volunteer Fire Department leads invitations from Ap ple Blossom Festival headquarters for the 1950 parades. W H Lawrence Jr says the Frederick county unit will rejoin the celebration. Invitations reached 112 fire companies 80 drum corps 151 bands and 221 units. Last year 45 bands and 20 drum corps joined the three hour grand feature parade. Local fire companies will meet later this month to plan sponsorship and name a parade director.

Mrs Florence Grim Dies at Age 90 in Winchester

Mrs Florence Dean Grim aged 90 widow of Thomas Edward Grim of 118 Peyton Street Winchester died recently. Born June 23 1859 she was a daughter of the late John H and Lucy C Dean. Clarke Delegation Fits Richmond for Moore Installation

Clarke county residents joined others in Richmond for the installation of Edgar Blackburn Moore of Berryville as speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates as the General Assembly opened its 1950 session. Moore, 52, a fruit grower banker and legislator, pledged fairness and asked for cooperation.
