The Handley Library ends 1931 with record home borrowing and highest attendance since 1928. Librarian C Vernon Eddy credits city support for the surge and notes the need for greater funding to serve Winchester's 11,000 population.
The Winchester Park Association held its first meeting of the year at City Hall. Plans include a baseball team next spring and summer with Ryland Conner as business manager and C G Whetzel and E A Crowl as athletic managers. Bids will be sought by April first for an eating stand at Rouss Spring Park and Company I's baseball squad seeks use of the park diamond this summer. Committees were appointed for finance grounds athletics improvements public ity amusements purchasing and an executive board to guide the year.
Crime concerns in Honolulu as soldiers return after a killing linked to an assault on a naval officer's wife. Judge Judd and Rear Admiral Stirling chaired talks leading to warnings and precautions. A grand jury was drawn and a trial jury panel named amid ongoing investigations and political scrutiny in Washington.
The District No. Association sponsors a cripples clinic on Saturday January 16 at its offices near the Court House from 9:30 a.m. to noon and 2 to 4 p.m. Dr C B Smith University Hospital orthopedic surgeon will lead a free examination and advice on remedies for crippled persons particularly youths with deformities.
Russell Jackson of South Kent street was convicted in police court of being drunk and disorderly and fined $12. George Taylor of Highland avenue faced a liquor possession case that started yesterday and was continued today for more evidence, with F. M. Brill handling defense.
Judge James H. Wilkerson of Chicago who sentenced Al Capone was advanced from the district to the circuit bench by President Hoover in recognition of his services in breaking up gangster activities in Chicago.

Schmidt son of Mr and Mrs Fred Schmidt were conducted by Rev Dr Luther A Thomas and Rev Dr F T McFaden at his home and Grace Lutheran Church A large crowd attended with many floral tributes Mount Hebron Cemetery received the casket with Masonic honors by Winchester Hiram Lodge No 21 and Winchester Commandery No 12 pallbearers included Allen B Gray Wilbur Huyett Dudley C Lichliter Harold C Jones Wendell B Goode and Walter M Shade out of town guests included Mayo F Schmidt of Boston Frank E Duntley of New York and O C Cassell of Washington.
Alfred H Byrd youngest son of the late Col and Mrs William Byrd of Winchester died last night at a sanitarium near Blue Summit Pennsylvania He was about 45 and born in Winchester He lived in Baltimore for years and spent summers in Clarke county His survivors include four sisters and two brothers The funeral will be in Winchester with interment at Mount Hebron Funeral details to be announced. Korea may be known as Chosen but we hope Manchuria won't be known as Taken.

Mrs Sallie Fiie Boxwell aged 69 wife of Charles H Boxwell long known Winchester businessman died about 1 pm at the home of her son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs Edward Lupton 625 South Stewart Street after a month of illness Funeral arrangements to be announced tomorrow with time and place to follow The death ends a well known local figure and retiree from business.
Julian Lee Glascock 56 a retired District of Columbia Fire Department member who served 26 years died of a heart attack at his North Beach Maryland home. Born in Paris Virginia he joined the fire department in 1904 and retired in 1930 after a noted rescue at the Knickerbocker Theatre disaster. Funeral held in Washington with Masonic rites. he is survived by a widow and two stepsons.
Edwin B. Carper 57 a Clarke county farmer from White Post died at his home after a stroke of apoplexy he suffered while helping a neighbor butcher hogs. He is survived by a widow four sons four sisters and five brothers. Funeral from Trinity Lutheran Church Stephens City will be at 11 a m Wednesday with burial in Green Hill Cemetery.
Charles Lewis, colored, in custody for the Lemley store robbery in Stephens City confessed to Chief Holis that he also robbed Mace and Mace at 304 South Braddock Street Sunday night. He acted alone at the first store and with Charles Hogan and Edward Bartlett, both colored, at Lemley’s. Hogan was later arrested in Frederick County.
Preaching is planned at Whitacre on Wednesday January 13 at 730 PM marking the first service of the year. Rev S J Goode of the Church of Christ will lead and all are welcome.
The Church of Christ hosted the opening prayer service of the union week. Rev. W. L. Dudley led the service with Rev. R. L. Williamson and Rev. E. T. Clark among speakers. Clark urged faith in Christ during uncertain times and called for a serious turning to Jesus amidst shifting moral and social conditions. The evening program at 8 featured Rev. Dudley and Rev. Emerson Rohart with a sermon on Human and Divine Requirements.
The Chamber of Commerce in the Capitol Theatre building will sell state automobile license tags from 7 to 10 30 p m Wednesday through Saturday this week for those working days. Police warn tags must be displayed by Friday January 15 or arrests may follow. City motor vehicle licenses are due now with applications to the revenue commissioner and payments to the city treasurer at City Hall.
An explosion in Kansas City last night killed Frank Alexander, 24, a theatre janitor, and damaged the Midland Theatre lobby after the final show. No other injuries reported. Manager John McManus offered no reason for the bombing.
Samuel D Evans a B and O railroad foreman and longtime Winchester figure died at 510 North Kent Street after a third paralytic stroke last Friday. He was 63, born February 22, 1868, and helped popularize the ice cream soda in Winchester. He leaves three daughters, one son, a sister, a grandson, and a brother in law. Funeral arrangements include a requiem mass at Sacred Heart Church and Catholic Cemetery interment.
City police chief announces strict enforcement requiring all automobiles in Winchester to show 1932 plates by January 15 1932. Arrests will follow for violators. Also notices list rental ad for a five room apartment by Earl Shade and sale of Barred Rock boilers by Shawnee Inn.
