President Truman placed full responsibility for the government clean up on Attorney General J. McGrath and said McGrath will remain in his cabinet. He asserted McGrath will lead the investigation and that no special commission is needed.
The 1952 Virginia traffic toll rose to fourteen with three new fatalities reported. Paul Mink, 21, of Damascus died in Abingdon hospital from injuries from a January 4 crash. Wesley Woolridge, 67, of Lynchburg, was killed when his pickup hit a pole near Rustburg. Glenna Sue Luckadoo, 22, of Salem, died after being struck on U S Route 220 south of Roanoke.
Communist riflemen halted a U N raiding party that pressed up a hill northwest of Yonchon in western Korea before dawn. The raiders failed to reach the summit and withdrew after two hours amid heavy mortar fire. Other front actions were light as snow and fog limited operations and Allied aircraft were largely grounded.
Senator Taft of Ohio will visit Richmond to address a Junior Chamber banquet and meet the General Assembly. State Senator Ted Dalton says Taft will be introduced in the Senate at noon and in the House of Delegates shortly after. He will also speak at a Young Republicans luncheon and at Virginia Union University in the afternoon.
President Truman stated Eisenhower will remain supreme commander of Allied forces in Europe as long as the general stays in the role. He praised Eisenhower as a grand man and said he would not relieve him without the general’s request, noting a potential presidential bid could require resignation. The president refused to disclose plans before the Republican convention.
Navy and Coast Guard planes searched the North Pacific for the freighter Pennsylvania and its 45 officers and crew believed adrift in lifeboats after reporting a crack and taking on water. Robert W. Freimann, 21, was captured by the FBI and admitted using 40 draft registrations to obtain identification. He cashed $7,700 in stolen checks including a $60 government check to Mrs. Joe Willie Riley, a Gold Star mother. The theft related to Mrs. Riley’s insurance benefits for Staff Sgt. William D. Riley.
A Wolverine passenger train derailed after sideswiping a 70 car freight train near Dexter Michigan. Six passengers were injured as the wreck blocked the main line between Detroit and Chicago and shook nearby homes eight miles northwest of Ann Arbor. Two diesel locomotives and 13 cars left the tracks when a box car jumped from the freight.
Governor Battle backs legislation from the State Department of Education to set a uniform teacher pay scale from 2000 to 3200 dollars yearly. The plan adds 100 dollars annually as teachers progress, so a three year veteran earning 2000 would move to 2300, then 2400 next year.
An anonymous Philadelphia writer advised the Virginia State Chamber of Commerce to elect Governor John Battle as president. Governor Battle declined to comment. Vernon E. Kemp noted Virginia as the mother of presidents.

Richmond reports the first retail sales tax bill, a three percent levy by Dr Jack W. Witten, to fund schools and a land tax relief program. Two thirds of revenue would back public schools and one third would aid local relief based on population. Legislative assignments were made and sessions adjourned until Monday as committees prepare for action.
In Atlanta a 22 year old bride, Agnes Dix, seeks to annul her marriage to William Sasser after learning her legal husband, Walter B. Dixon, once reported killed in Korea, is alive and a prisoner. Judge E E Andrews set a hearing for January 28. Dixon’s next of kin and service records are noted. Dixon’s presumed death and Dixon’s prison status trigger the petition and affidavit from Sasser.
The report shows Frederick City issued 1 930 marriage licenses in 1951 up 57 from 1 473 in 1950 while the county issued 1 082 licenses in 1951 down 122 from 1 204 in 1950. Monthly totals for both areas are listed, noting a Leap Year remark about pursuits in 1951.
