Mr Cartmell outlines a whirlwind plan to canvass Frederick County and Winchester starting January 17. The intended monument honors Confederate soldiers and civilians from the area without partisan aims, recognizing heroism and sacrifice in the Southern cause.
The government announced that the entire Yun Nan province is in revolt. Direct communication within the province has been cut for two days. Government forces have been ordered to advance to confront the rebels, estimated at 50,000 fully equipped men.
Isaac W. Martin of Nain died last night at his daughters home on West King street Martinsburg after a two week illness. He was 52 and a former Baltimore and Ohio Railroad fireman who later farmed in Nain. Survived by three daughters two brothers and two sisters. Funeral Sunday in Martinsburg then burial at Mount Hebron Winchester. Rev John Henry Parlett to officiate. Also Shenandoah Valley National Bank names William A. Collins as new bookkeeper director. former Winchester deputy revenue commissioner.
The Friendship Fire Company elected new officers for the coming year at its annual meeting. Captain Carson Spillman will continue as chief while Ward Carper becomes secretary and Adam Forney treasurer. Other officers include Lieutenants W C Perry Irwin Carper John Renner Ray Grim chaplain Rev William T Walters surgeons Dr W A Bell and Dr J Fr Ward counsel James P Reardon chief engineer Thomas Spilman and assistants Edward Spillman Lee Boxwell Mahlon Jackson Walter Barnett chief pipeman Curt ford Grim and chief hoseman Robert Aera with trustees J P Haddox Adam Forney W B Jones William Deshon and James P Reardon.

Joseph Henry Potts 28, longtime Winchester connection, died when his automobile overturned near Dubois Wyoming. He served as general manager and secretary of the Wyoming Tie and Timber Co with headquarters at Riverton and was a U S forestry service officer. He studied forestry at Yale and on the Biltmore estate and recently left government service to join the family firm. Burial will be in Shepherdstown WV. Survived by parents a brother Llewelyn and sisters Eleanor and Margaret.
State Senator Harry Flood Byrd will address the Virginia Road Builders Association at its fourth annual convention in Richmond January 18 and 19. His topic is Road Building from the County's Standpoint, to be delivered January 19 afternoon. George P. Coleman, State Highways Commissioner, serves as association president.
Master Lindsey Herrell of Nations Avenue underwent a delicate operation at Winchester Memorial Hospital to remove an abscess near his brain. The surgery was successful and the patient is rapidly improving. He hopes to return home soon and is well liked by friends and associates.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert F Brill entertained last evening at their home No 515 Fairmont avenue the clerks employed at Brill and Pitter store of North Main street Supper was served in most tempting style and the evening was spent pleasantly Those present were Misses Ethel Scrivener Nannie Purcell Cora White Mary Hammond Ada Lola Carper and Messrs Fred Johnston Edward Peer Charles Richard and Roger Brown.

A blaze at 3 a.m. burned the Wadesville store and Baltimore and Ohio Railroad station in Clarke County. The building, post office and contents were destroyed. insurance covered some losses but total damage far exceeded. Neighbors limited damage to nearby structures despite cold and snow.
The City School Board chose Miss Edna Barnhart of Greensburg Pennsylvania to replace Mrs. W H Carter as Latin and German teacher at John Kerr High School. Barnhart will begin duties January 26 and is a Greensburg High School and Hood College alumna. Carter leaves after five years to Hertford North Carolina where her husband Rev W H Carter is pastor.
Willie Brown son of Frank Brown of Baublitz meat market underwent surgery at Memorial Hospital on Tuesday after a fall from a small bone fragment in his foot last September. Dr. Robert McC. Glass performed the operation. Though risk of lockjaw loomed, anti toxins prevented it. Willie is recovering at home on South Braddock Street and friends wish him a speedy recovery.
Mrs. John Bailey of White Hall brought to The Star today a sausage encased in a hog's appendix. She has found the appendix to have good country sausage, though doctors say the appendix has no use except in appendicitis.
Joseph Gamble Mason died January 3 in Clarksburg at 74 from pneumonia. Born at Wheatland near White Post Virginia, he served in Clarke Cavalry in the Civil War and helped early in 1861 at Harpers Ferry. Survived by a widow and three daughters. funeral conducted by Rev Charles Baird Mitchell at Christ Episcopal Church with burial in Masonic Cemetery.
A blaze in Cincinnati leveled the Adams Express Company office and warehouse early today, burning $300,000 in paper money. A nearly $1,000,000 shipment from New York had been received and was to be delivered to local banks. Firefighters saved about $700,000 while fourteen carloads of valuables, valued at $150,000, were lost.
Union services at Market Street Methodist Episcopal Church cause the Christian Endeavor Society of the Christian Church to move its gathering to 3 80 o clock Sunday afternoon instead of the usual evening hour.
The man with a Southern exposure, noted lawyer and humorist, will appear with Capt. J. R. Hobson at a temperance meeting. The event is set for City Hall Auditorium on Sunday January 16 at 3 PM.
Mrs Emily Grim died at 10 20 Thursday at her son Henry Pope's home several miles west of town aged 82 native of Carpers Valley Frederick County and member of the Carper family. She is survived by one daughter and six sons including Henry John and Philip Grim. Funeral Saturday at 11 from Centenary Reformed Church with Rev T K Cromer. interment Mount Hebron Cemetery. Relatives meet at the house at 10.
Robbers dynamited a safe in the Internal Revenue Department offices in a federal building in St. Paul. They escaped with stamps weighing nearly 400 pounds valued at about a half million dollars. The negotiable stamps covered mortgages deeds and commercial transactions and ranged from a half cent to 600 dollars.
Porto Rican and a young Porto Rican were executed this morning in Sing Sing for the murder of Beasie Kramer of Schenectady New York. Deputy Warden Spencer Miller wept after the execution, saying he had been forced by law to take the life of a fellow man.
A house and lot at 26 Valley Avenue fronting 39 feet and extending west about 100 feet to Braddock Street sold yesterday at public auction for 900 dollars. Special Commissioner James P Reardon conducted the sale under a Frederick county Circuit Court decree in the Union Bank of Winchester suit against Alice M Hillyard and others. The property includes a dwelling, outbuildings, and a garden.

Two hundred thousand Bulgar Austrian and German troops are massed along the Greek frontier ready to invade Macedonia and strike at the allies defending Saloniki. The report says Italy received 400 million dollars for promising not to make a separate peace.
In Chicago officials of the Miners Union and coal operators renewed efforts to unite Western soft coal mine owners into one body. Some mine officials hope to persuade operators to attend a counter conference in Indianapolis on January 1, where the new wage scale will be presented.
Mrs. B M Knight attended the funeral of her brother in law Ambrose P Peters in Allentown Pennsylvania. Peters a prominent wholesale businessman had been ill for some time and died early Wednesday. Services were held at 2 30 this afternoon with Mrs Knight among attendees.
Mrs W M Fletcher entertained friends last evening at her Hast Piccadilly home. Refreshments were served and music along with parlor games kept guests amused. Attending were Mr and Mrs Robert B Smith and daughter Elizabeth, Charles Fuller and Henrietta Fuller, Mr and Mrs Harry R Taylor, Mrs Willem Wood and daughter Elizabeth Wood, Mr and Mrs Harry Fletcher, Kathleen Smith and B E Yeakley.
Mr and Mrs George N Herbert arrive in this city from Washington for the winter season and stay with Mr and Mrs W H Sanford at 1th Market Street. Herbert long served as agent for the Express Company here and has recent ties to the Washington office.
