Kinzel B. Grubbs Jr was named captain at the Friendship Fire Company annual meeting. He succeeds Orin Ritter and will oversee officers including Rob ert Geanious first lieutenant and Robert Boyd second lieutenant. Grubbs, a 15 year member, is a wartime veteran and current Administration Supply technician. The gathering also elected trustees Ryland Conner Glenn Kerns Robert Ryan Wade Guard and Orin Ritter with committees to be named Saturday.

Grace H. Brown was found not guilty of arson in Frederick County Circuit Court after a three day trial. The jury deliberated under two hours with testimonies from a dozen witnesses. The Commonwealth alleged she procured James Franklin to burn the Kernstown Motel, while the defense claimed she had no knowledge of the blaze.

Family of Five Dead of Exposure in Alaska Snow
The Simeon Wassela family of five was found frozen on the snow near Lake Miamna about 250 miles southwest of Anchorage. Two of their nine sled dogs survived. The victims include a 40 year old father a 35 year old mother and three children under 14. A Civil Air Patrol plane located the bodies. Searchers believe exposure caused the deaths. The family had left Newhalen December 27 bound for Iguigig 50 miles away.

Darden resents Northern interference and lecturing
Colgate W. Darden Jr., president of the University of Virginia, told The New York Times he will not back moves to force whites into schools with Blacks. Heating Oil Prices Jump Along Seaboard
Heating oil prices rose along the Atlantic seaboard amid stronger demand and higher transport costs. Esso Standard Oil boosted prices of middle distillates including home heating oil by three tenths of a cent per gallon, with marine diesel fuel up thirteen cents per barrel and increases in other grades. Auto Crash Injures Three In Stephenson Area Trailer
A 1941 Buick driven by Hugh Thomas Brill left Rt. 11 near Stephenson, struck a telephone pole, and crashed into a Whitacre Trailer Park home injuring Mr. and Mrs. Carl Duke and their infant son. The trailer was knocked off its foundation over 11 feet. The driver was hospitalized for observation.

Balcom Convicted by Army Court-Martial on Four Counts
First Lt George E. Balcom of Nashua New Hampshire was found guilty by an Army general court-martial on four counts including shooting a government stenographer at a post officers club on October 15. The verdict came after about two hours of deliberation by a nine officer panel. Balcom faces more than 20 years in maximum sentences. The charges include assault with intent to murder on Sylvia V. Miller a Leesburg Virginia resident, aggravated assault on Capt William Ball, assault on Miss Miller in August at Balcom’s apartment, and giving false official information regarding Miss Miller’s hospital admission. Balcom did not testify.
