Miner Killed In Frostburg Area As Gas Blast Hits Mine
Five miles east of Stafford in the Claryville mine of Sullivan Brothers Coal Co a gas explosion killed one miner and seriously burned another Marshall Long age 31. The blast occurred as open lamp fueled ignite due to accumulated gas. Early day shift of 40 miners arrived after the blast but could not enter the shaft until debris cleared and the mine was inspected by a rescue squad. Stafford and Long were night coal cutters who had worked through the night.
