Circuit Court Judge Elliott instructed a seven man four woman jury to return a verdict of innocence in the case of 23 year old Marion Edward Young charged with larceny of an automobile. The trial ended after testimony showed Young borrowed a 1953 car August 17 and disappeared, with the vehicle later found in Columbia South Carolina. The Commonwealth argued he roved for work. counsel for Young contended the car was used by him previously and his brother testified the car helped pay for it. Judge Marshall instructed the jury to acquit unless beyond a reasonable doubt Young would not return the vehicle.
Rappahannock County schools stayed closed while other Valley districts reopened after slick roads and a weekend snowfall. Warren County opened after an extra holiday, and forecasters expect more snow to hit the area tomorrow night as the five day outlook hints at more white conditions. Since December 6 the region has seen about 13 inches of snow.
U S Army Col John Paul Vann formed a 60 man patrol including cooks to trap a Communist guerrilla unit fleeing into the Mekong delta. Authorities said 17 prisoners were captured and 65 government troops were killed in earlier fighting. Vann stressed the patrol protected the major and fired only if fired upon. The government reported 101 Viet Cong killed in the Tan Hiep area and noted a separate Pleiku attack with American and Vietnamese casualties.
In Moscow 32 Evangelical Christians who sought asylum at the American Embassy boarded a train for Siberia after resisting police. The Soviet spokesman said they would not lose their jobs and would be treated in return. The embassy cited a firm Soviet commitment to their welfare. the U.S. State Department said foreign missions lack asylum authority.
Buses and street cars halted in Rome as workers staged a 24 hour wage strike disrupting city transport and daily life. Italian labor unions led the action with officials unsure of broader impact across the capital.
Stephens City Town Council approved a plan for a monthly garbage pick up replacing the quarterly schedule. Bids will be sought immediately, with the aim to eliminate the town dump by using contractor dumping facilities. The measure came after notes on using taxpayer funds for garbage removal and dump maintenance.
