Director McAdoo announces drastic steps to relieve the railroad war board. New committees and officers are named to control operations and speed coal and freight. Five ships will carry England from the northeast coast, with plans to expand service.
The February 4 week is set by the Justice Department for registering all Germans and continental United States aliens as postmasters under a wartime proclamation. Registrants need a certificate, may not change address without police or postmaster approval, and face interment for violation. Austria-Hungary subjects and German women or under fourteen are exempt. Instructions urge courteous handling by registrars.

Hugh S. Lupton Jr son of a Kentucky farmer and insurance agent wed Mildred B Hathaway a West Virginia girl on Christmas Eve at Morgantown. They will reside near Clearbrook and be at home after February first.
A quiet marriage was solemnized at the Christian Church parsonage at 618 North Main Street last Thursday afternoon. Edgar C. Wolford married Miss Marty Ella McDonald in a ceremony performed by Rex W. T. Waiters. The groom is the son of Samuel and Mrs. Wolford and the bride the daughter of Marion and Mrs. McDonald.
Mrs. Newman died at 96 after eight decades as a Methodist Church member. She was daughter of John Hickman of Woodstock and lived in Liberty Furnace and the Newman farm before her 1912 widowhood. Survived by her two sons Judge B D Newman and Walter H Newman both of Woodstock, a daughter’s husband M B Wunder, a sister Mary Armstrong of Lynchburg, and a widowed daughter. Funeral services were held at Woodstock yesterday afternoon.
Mrs. Wall and Miss Hawkins wed in a ceremony known to friends. The bride, from Virginia, managed Hotel Evans after her first husband Lucas died in 1916. Mr. Wall, a Winchester business leader and former stock broker, will join his wife at the Evans Hotel after returning from a South trip.
The Union Prayer services start Monday January 7 at Centenary Reform Church with Dr Bowers speaking on Thanksgiving and Confession. January 8 Braddock Methodist hosts Rev Cromer on The Church Universal. January 9 Christ's Episcopal hosts Dr Lacy on Nations and Their Rulers. January 10 First Christian on Families and Education. January 11 Presbyterian on Home Missions. Omitted last year due to tabernacle meetings, strong turnout expected this year.

Emma Virginia Triplett wife of Samuel S Triplett proprietor of the East Piccadilly restaurant died at 6 this morning after a long illness of tuberculosis. She was formerly Miss Whitacre age about 45. Survived by husband two daughters Emma Love and Eva May. Funeral from Episcopal Church at 10 30 Thursday with Rev William D Smith officiating and interment at Mount Hebron Cemetery.
During the illness and death of Mrs. Mary J. Womerdorph our friends and neighbors were unusually kind and sympathetic to us in our trouble. We express heartfelt gratitude for the support and comforts received.

Clara Goode Baker daughter of Mr and Mrs Timothy Goode married Dor man L Affleck of Winchester on Christmas day at the Goode home. The ceremony was by Rev B W Brubaker with maid of honor Ita Clevenger and bridesmaid Miss Histe Affleck. Best man Bestest Affleck and groomsman Nathan Hottle. A wedding dinner followed and gifts included silverware and china. The couple, from Frederick county families, will reside at the bride’s Clarke county Va farm after holidays.
The Virginia Volunteers seek twenty five new volunteers as seventy five have shown intent to join and forty seven have signed enlistment papers.
