Front Royal Warren County voters reject merger plan

Front Royal and Warren County voters split on consolidation with town residents voting 1497 589 in favor while county residents rejected 1597 793. A combined majority would have passed but the measure failed as both sides did not approve. Annexation of four square miles to the town follows.

City Council Upholds and Strengthens Sign Regulations

The City Council, in a work session on the Zoning Ordinance, upheld and strengthened the sign section amid business opposition led by the Chamber of Commerce. Mayor Bell said the rules aim to help business and curb sign blight, while Wade Ferguson of the Chamber questioned added complexity and possible mediation. Three of four changes were dropped for lack of motion, and a new restriction proposed by City Planner Reed Nester was approved, though a billboards prohibition proposal by W A Johnston faced rejection.

Rodman Seeks Republican South Ward City Council Seat

Rodman of West Cork Street announced his bid for one of three South Ward seats on the City Council. Winchester Republicans set a May 4 election nominating convention at Duff's Pagoda Room.

House Approves Bills To Increase Allowances And Salaries

The Virginia House of Delegates approved three bills to raise lawmakers pay and expense allowances. One measure would set 5200 for a secretary, 30 per day for assistants, weekly round trips, and a 200 monthly expense, retroactive to 1976. A second bill would lift daily pay to 50 with mileage. A third bill would raise annual salaries to 8000 for members and 16500 for top leaders in 1980, with current salaries at 5475 and 10525 respectively. passage in 70 to 24.

Ford Edges Reagan In New Hampshire Primary Win

President Ford beat Reagan in New Hampshire by 51 to 49 percent with partial returns. Carter led the crowded Democratic field with about 29 percent as Udall and Bayh trailed. Carter touted a strong finish and planned a brisk campaign toward Massachusetts and Florida contests.
