DETROIT Feb 25 The draft board announced Hank Greenberg the Detroit Tigers outfielder is in Class 1 and will be called for induction in regular order likely next June. Board 23 chairman Ben O. Shepherd said Greenberg had asked to be in Class 2 which would have allowed six months deferment.
Officials of the Virginia Woolen Company announce a five percent wage hike affecting about 500 production employees, effective February 24. The move, described as a boost to purchasing power, marks an increase in the firm’s labor compensation.
A mass meeting of steel workers at the Bethlehem Steel plant in N Y was called to set steps to implement a vote on a strike. Lorne H. Nel of SWOC said workers may decide on a strike date. Van A. Bittner sought a Washington meeting with Sidney Hillman at the office of production management.
Preliminary talks were held today among about 75 operatives and representatives from an eight state Appalachian area to discuss a coal contract. The meeting aimed to prepare for negotiations next month with roughly five area miners and seventy percent coal involvement.

Sir Frederick Banting co discoverer of insulin was killed with two others when their military plane crashed in Newfoundland. The crash site was found Friday and the bodies were recovered the following day on a secret war mission to Britain.

Former Maryland Governor Harry W. Nice died at 5 a.m. in Richmond while visiting friends en route from Florida to Baltimore. He was 63. Survived by his wife, a son in Baltimore, and a sister, his passing follows a career marked by fiscal surplus, large state construction projects, and a cautious stance on capital punishment.
Treasury proposes to legalize weaker whiskey brandy rum and gin with a reduction of minimum proof from 80 to 60 percent. A March 18 hearing will consider the plan urged by legislators distillers and others to offer cheap products to compete with bootleg liquor, especially in the south.

Washington February 25 A House interstate commerce subcommittee approved HR 2495 to authorize Maryland to build a new highway bridge across the Potomac River from Ima Hook Maryland to the Virginia shore.
