CIO steel workers authorize a strike at Bethlehem Steel's Lackawanna New York plant in protest of lockouts and union demands. The Lackawanna facility covers about two miles by one mile, employs about 14,000 and runs at defense production capacity. The parent company holds roughly 1.5 trillion in defense contracts.
