Death of American Aviator Robert Short Confirmed

Shanghai dispatch reports official Chinese sources confirm the death of American aviator Robert Short serving with the Chinese army. Short reportedly volunteered for service a week earlier and on February 21 shot down a Japanese plane near Woosung before his own craft was hit.

Wreath Placed On Mary Washington Tomb By Winchester Group

The Winchester Bicentennial Committee sent a wreath to the tomb of Mrs. Mary Washington in Fredericksburg. Local citizens crafted it from box wood ivy and myrtle. The tribute was one of several from Virginia cities and was described in the Fredericksburg Free Lance Star clipping.

Blacksburg calls local pastor Rev E D Witherspoon

The Rev E D Witherspoon, pastor of Highland Avenue Presbyterian Church in this city and of Nineveh Church in Warren County, has received a call from the Blacksburg Presbyterian Church in Virginia. If he accepts, he will succeed Rev Norman Johnson who resigned to move to Rocky Mount North Carolina. Witherspoon is a Davidson College and Union Theological Seminary graduate noted for his success in Winchester and is highly regarded by both congregations and the community. Mrs Witherspoon was formerly Frances T McFaden daughter of Rev Dr and Mrs F T McFaden.

Berryville Clarke county exhibit committee names sub chairs

Mrs. Kenneth N. Gilpin announces a Clarke county Washington chair and appoints sub chairmen for discovering and returning loaned articles, costumes, insurance duties, labeling, publicity and exhibit logistics ahead of Apple Blossom Festival events. County Supervisors oppose gas tax diversion to cities

Frederick County Board of Supervisors pass a resolution opposing a Virginia bill that would divert gasoline tax revenue from counties to cities. The board calls on Sen T Russell Cather and Del Joseph S Denny to oppose the measure while noting county school system short term loans totaling 18524.04 and plans to borrow 6500 from the State Literary Fund with a lien on the Whitlock avenue school.

Funeral Rites Held For Late Sutton Harris

The funeral of Sutton I. Harris, of Winchester, died early Monday at his brother in law and sister’s home at 305 National Avenue. Services were at the Pearson home conducted by Rev. Brashears of Market Street M E Church. A quartet sang hymns, and many friends attended. Interment was in Mount Hebron Cemetery. Demonstrations In Food Preparation For Group Heads

An adult leader training meeting led by Miss Janet Cameron of Virginia Polytechnic Institute demonstrated five one dish meals showing how to combine meats vegetables rice spaghetti and bread crumbs.
