Major General Frederick Funston dies suddenly in San Antonio Texas at 9 15 pm from acute indigestion and heart failure. He commanded the Department of the South and may be buried in Arlington National Cemetery. The Virginia connections trace Funston to Winchester Clarke County and related families with roots in White Post and Loyal lines.
In Frederick county circuit court Judge Frank B Whiting ruled the violin, claimed by George B Hoof of Jefferson County West Virginia, belonged to Priest B Kitchen of Frederick County Virginia. The 1670 Jacobus Steiner instrument valued at 1000 to 3000 dollars was awarded to Kitchen with Hoof ordered to pay costs. decision includes continuation on page five.
Lewis Miller, a renowned Winchester painter and paper-hanger, is reported in serious condition with abdominal cancer. An operation offered no relief due to advanced disease. Miller is a prominent southern city resident with many friends concerned. His business partner J B Violett has also been ill but improving at his South Main Street home.
Dispatch from San Antonio reports General Funston died after dinner at the St. Anthony Hotel. A companion noted he ate sparingly and listened to music before collapsing, with a post and a little girl nearby. A doctor arrived to pronounce him dead.
Deputy Sheriff L E Armel arrested John L Harper a 22 year old soldier formerly with the Fourth Maryland Regiment after a search found a collection of arms and swag. He was wanted on a warrant from his stepson Jed White alleging theft of a gold watch chain revolver money and other items. The story continues on page three.
A blaze on East 128th street killed Mrs. Elizabeth Graves and Mrs. Addie Carcer and injured many others. Firemen battled flames for 85 minutes as smoke reached the fourth floor and rescue efforts saved about a score of residents. Stella Farley and Herbert Keley were among the injured.
The Duke of Alavola, a 39 year old Italian nobleman, renounced King Victor Emmanuel III and his title and effected American citizenship in New York. He has lived in the United States for several years. He says citizenship in these stirring times is worth more than a dukedom.
John Stuart and Fred Nail, known Winchester residents, told Police Chief M A Doran they planted a black powder bomb in front of Mrs Franck Bakers home on Eats Piccadilly Street early Friday. Justice Fultz fined each man $100 plus costs. both men cooperated with investigators.
John R. Jones of Winchester now living in Charlottesville was awarded 1500 dollars plus costs by a jury in Albemarle County Circuit Court for injuries from a wooden bridge support that collapsed while he crossed. Jones was permanently injured. Judge R T W Duke represented him.
