Guard training delay eyed in six month plan

National Guard leaders pressed for a one year postponement of six months active duty for recruits. If kept, only those 18 and a half and older would face six months, while younger enlistees would do 11 weeks with option for more. A split three month segment plan was dismissed as hard to recruit.

Fire destroys Falwell's Market near Lynchburg

A blaze three miles east of Lynchburg destroyed Falwell's Market early today causing about 50 000 in damages. Owner Herbert B Falwell Jr said the building and equipment were worth over 40 000 with 8 000 to 10 000 in merchandise. Firemen lacked water supply as the roof collapsed after 20 minutes and shells exploded sending flames into the air. The safe containing receipts was not found.

Rocket designer says Mars could be reached in 400 days

German born Dr. Ernst Stuhlinger, chief of guidance at Redstone Arsenal, said an ionic rocket using a nuclear reactor could reach Mars in 400 days and return in about 320, traveling up to 86400 miles per hour. He noted a photon rocket remains theoretical. The symposium drew 300 missile experts in San Diego.
