Last Ayres family member dies in Washington
Asher Ayres, last member of Augusta county s prominent Ayres family, died Friday at his home in Washington DC. He was born in Staunton in 1858 and worked in Mutual Life Insurance and Equitable Life before relocating to Washington. His widow Blanche Livers Ayres died in 1920 and lies in Thornrose Cemetery Staunton. He leaves distant Augusta county relatives and no close immediate family.

Thirteen Lives Unnerved in New York Tenement Fire
A large five story tenement in New York's Lower East Side burned rapidly, claimed thirteen lives and left eight families homeless. The fire, likely incendiary, raced up the stairs aided by an open door draft, trapping residents on upper floors. Five boys, two girls, four women and two men perished. a charred infant was found at its mother's breast. Police believe the Barrett family on the top floor was wiped out except for a five year old niece who survived in critical condition.
