Dr James Mercer Garnett a prominent Virginia figure dies at his Baltimore home after a brief illness at age 76. He led St Johns College Annapolis as president 1870 to 1880 and taught at the University of Virginia 1882 to 1896. He served in Confederate units and held literary honors including presidencies of the American Philosophical and American Dialect Societies. He is survived by his widow Kate M Noland and children James Mercer Garnett Jr Ella Garnett and sister Ella T Garnett.

President Wilson commuted to six months the two year sentence of William H. Armstrong of Philadelphia. Armstrong, convicted with five others in April 1914 of using the mails to defraud on the sale of Mexican lumber lands.
Right Reverend John Walter Shennanhan, third bishop of the Harrisburg Catholic diocese, died this morning following an operation. He was born May 14, 1856 in Lancaster Pennsylvania.
