Fire Destroys Welling Home Shop and Outbuildings
A fire south of Winchester destroyed a nearly completed semi bungalow and an adjacent two story shop on afflick Road at Route 522. Loss estimated at 7500 with limited insurance. No water supply hampered firefighting but volunteers kept flames from spreading to outbuildings and stock was moved to safety. The new dwelling belonged to Ralph Beaver and the shop to Frank Beaver. Local residents aided as portraits of flames and heat affected nearby structures.

Washingtons English Coach and Its Aftermath
Soon after Washington became President he imported a fine English coach with allegorical copper panels of the four seasons. It traveled the land drawn by four to six bays. After Washington’s death the coach passed to Custis, then left at Annfield in Clarke County. It was dismembered by Bishop Meade and pieces dispersed to friends or made into trinkets for sale. The part kept at Mountain View remained in use. A sale notice ends with an unrelated for sale line about a dishwasher and razor.
