The U S Command reports 131 North Vietnamese killed in two battles northeast of Saigon two US helicopters lost and four damaged. Allied casualties include seven killed and 15 wounded with five Americans dead. Weekly totals show 183 Americans and 233 South Vietnamese killed, 2 264 enemy killed.
The Mercury reports a chilly night at 22 degrees with expectations of a colder below freezing night. A low of 12 to 18 is forecast with gradual warming to Saturday. The note also lists local bargains at stores and a correction to last night’s INS Super Food Stores ad.
The Winchester Frederick County Industrial Development Corp elected new board members for one year at its annual meeting held at the Commercial and Savings Bank. Col Conrad Follansbee received a plaque for nine years of service as secretary and Wade D Ferguson Jr was named secretary replacing him. New officers include John C Blackburn as treasurer and Kremer as president. Ferguson becomes executive director of the Chamber of Commerce and new secretary of the corporation.
Municipal Court Judge John W. Rice ordered Robert Edward Nail 40 Gainesboro held for grand jury action at a preliminary hearing on felonious assault and breaking and entering charges. Nail is accused of breaking into a house at 311 National Ave. Jan. 21 and shooting his brother in law Leo Daniel Lease 42 of 1623 S. Loudoun St. Lease was taken to the University of Virginia Hospital and underwent surgery for a gunshot wound to the head and later was reported in satisfactory condition. Police said a 6 48 p m call reported a shooting at 311 National Ave and that the assailant remained in the house.
Washington experts say the Soviet Union seeks talks to limit nuclear weapons due to economic strain from catching up with U.S. power. They warn preconditions will include Vietnam and Middle East issues, with Russia also able to pressure Hanoi and Arab allies. Analysts note U.S. Vietnam costs reduce focus on nuclear superiority while Russia expands ICBMs, though Kremlin intent remains unclear.
Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird said the Nixon administration is reviewing Sentinel antiballistic missile plans and may move missile sites away from major population centers. John S. D. Eisenhower, son of former president, is expected to be named ambassador to Belgium. A nomination date is not set, possibly by the time President Nixon arrives in Brussels on a five nation European tour starting Feb 23. The 46 year old retired Army colonel authored a World War II Belgium book and was a White House military assistant 1958 to 1961.
The Downtown Development Committee will hold an open meeting next Wednesday at 7 30 p m at the George Washington Hotel. Businesses and landlords in the downtown core may ask questions about the DDC plan for a semi mall on Loudoun Street.
