AP dispatch notes Western Front progress as Canadians take Kleve and Gennep, Americans seize Pruem and push toward Wesel and Goch. Russians concentrate on the Bober front threatening Dresden, while Italians report counterattacks repelled on the western front and Pacific forces close on Manila and Luzon.
British Empire forces report steady gains east and south of Kleve as Canadians reach Greithausen near the Rhine. American Third Army opens a new hole in the Siegfried Line opposite Luxembourg, linking Echternach and Wallendorf bridgeheads into a 2 mile salient near Coblenz. Russians close on Berlin, Crerar’s Canadians repel Rhine counterattacks amid flooded lowlands and breached dykes.
An unconfirmed radio broadcast by the Japanese Comei News Agency claimed two submarines sunk. The report said one submarine was sunk by air forces west of the Japanese homeland.
Berlin radio reported Budapest was evacuated by its German Hungarian garrison after a dawn breakout toward Soviet siege lines. Moscow claimed 112,000 enemy troops captured and said the Royal Palace fortress fell, while street fighting persisted across the Danube capital.

The 26 year old American by birth and admirer of Germany and Erich Gimpel the 35 year old German engineer face a seven member military commission on charges of spying.
Allies plan to crush Nazi Germany with coordinated offensives and prepare postwar peace terms. The Big Three agreed on a four power occupation, a Moscow reparations commission, and a new framework for Poland. A San Francisco conference will consider Dumbarton Oaks proposals for a world security league.
The Associated Press reports at least 42 killed and 200 injured as tornadoes struck Mississippi and Alabama. Montgomery area suffered heavy damage with over 25 dead and 100 injured. Other fatalities occurred in Livingston York and Meridian as trains were overturned and mills and warehouses destroyed.
AP from Tokyo radio warned home front of a possible Allied invasion of Formosa Taiwan. The broadcast noted Formosa as a Vanguard for Greater East Asia defense and highlighted proximity of the Philippines to the Taiwan fortress via the Bashi Channel and links to the Ryukyu/Okinawa group.
In Washington on February 13, Congress debated the Crimea talks and a Crimean Charter as possible steps toward Russian participation against Japan. Senator Connally voiced strong belief Stalin may have promised Moscow's entry, while acknowledging no direct information.
