The twenty second annual banquet by the Charley Rouss Fire Company celebrated the late Charles Broadway Rouss. Over 250 guests attended at the hall after assembling at City Hall. The event featured speeches, music by Prof. Miller Jenkins directed orchestra, and a formal dinner with a concluding note from Rev. Dr. J. H. Lacy.
In Cumberland Maryland the Shenandoah Valley Academy from Winchester lost to the Central Y M C A by 35 to 30. The game featured tight defense and solid shooting with Eisler scoring early and the A C A squad using sharp passing and team play. The margin remained narrow from start to finish as the whistle ended the second half.

The Second Virginia Infantry left Brownsville Sunday night after a fire destroyed equipment of Companies G and H. 15,000 rounds of ball ammunition exploded as guardsmen fought the blaze. The unit marches through Brownsville and horns sound farewell as the Virginia Cavalry stays behind uncertain about muster. The regiment is expected to reach Richmond Friday morning, routing via Houston New Orleans Chattanooga Bristol and Roanoke. Colonel Wright a Kentuckian of Virginia ancestry accompanied the troops.
The funeral for J. Elmer Hershberger, former Star employee, who died of tuberculosis, was held at Sacred Heart Church at 10 am with Rev. John McVerry officiating. Interment followed in Catholic Cemetery as hymns led by the choir included Lead Kindly Light Nearer My God to Thee and Jesus Lover of My Soul. pallbearers were Joseph Sullivan Donald McFadden Maurice Murnan Harry H. Lynch Alfred Henkel Harry F. Byrd and Lewis Bromley.
All creditors of J. W. Bowles deceased are asked to present their accounts for payment by the administrators Scott Grant and T Russell Cather. Persons having horses cattle or other personal property of the estate should return them to the Bowles farm at once.

Officials privately doubt Carranza’s neutral export cutoffs but expect tension over Tampico oil shipments and foreign interests. John C. Clark reports stock, implements, harness, corn and fodder at Packhorse road east of Shockeysville.
Berlin dispatch reports German forces stormed a fortified position south of the Putna road in the Carpathians, capturing three officers and 168 men along with three machine guns and substantial field material. Other actions include German detachments taking prisoners and equipment near Drysvyaty Lake and Macedonian height east of Polarlovo with limited losses.
In Frederick County Circuit Court a colored woman Mary J Williams was found guilty of simple assault after a charge of assault with intent to kill a sewing machine agent. The jury fined her $5 and backed a debtor’s right to resist removal of pledged property without lawful officer aid.
At the residence of Dr. Humston in Kernstown a sale offers five suits of furniture, rugs, chairs, stoves, and kitchen utensils. A lady at the house will receive interested buyers.
A Winchester and Frederick county effort seeks a provisional guard of young men trained for war. It would be independent of state or national authorities and led by local military veterans. Critics say the national guard is too elastic and may force police duty far from home. Continued on page two.
Washington February 13 Senator Saulsbury of Delaware introduced a measure to open American ports to enterprising warships aiding anti submarine operations. The bill would allow British and French vessels to base against U boats in the Atlantic, with ties to international law and foreign relations. Germany asserted it would not yield on unrestricted submarine warfare.
Dr. C Alphonso Smith Poe professor of English at the University of Virginia will speak at City Hall Auditorium on February 15. His talk titled Southern Oratory Before the War will be free and open to all. The lecture is part of the Handley series and highlights Southern leadership and life before the war.
