Report from the theater describes a heavy Japanese casualty toll after a cavalry assault. Chinese troops reportedly made an old fashioned daytime rush against a Japanese position near a chapel before being repelled by machine guns.
Shanghai area fighting continues with Chinese squads challenging Japanese forces at Chapei and Woosung. Marines and U S infantry reinforce the international settlement while plans for a temporary neutral zone are discussed in Washington. Twenty five Tokyo university students are arrested in a antiwar protest.
At the world disarmament conference in Geneva on February 10, Italian Foreign Minister Dino Grandi and Japan's Ambassador Tsuneo Matsudaira presented the final two proposals from the five powers. Grandi's speech praised disarmament and listed war items to be scrapped including capital ships submarines aircraft carriers heavy artillery tanks bombing aircraft and chemical weapons while urging new laws to protect civilians. Matsudaira expressed Japan's commitment to disarmament despite tensions in the Far East and proposed curbs on battle ships gun calibers carrier tonnage air bombardment and chemical and bacteriological weapons.
In Scranton at 6 o clock gunmen in a car fired sawed off shotguns at two men. Jacob Levine, 30, was killed. Edward Weiss, 21, was wounded and may die. Weiss had been arrested previously in a silk theft case at the Erie Railroad freight station.
Beatrice Stewart, 17, fiancée of Lawrence Fleet, 18, told a reporter she believes Fleet is protecting another person in the Keller hardware store murder case. She plans to stay with him, even if it costs her Baltimore job, and says they hoped to marry, delaying after his dismissal.
Miss Virginia Harris 20 of Stuart's Draft is hospitalized with a sprained hip and probable internal injuries after leaping from a speeding Chevrolet near Strasburg during an attack. She claims the driver, who offered a ride from Martinsburg, drank and fled. she does not know his identity or plate number.
Rep Rainey of Illinois the Democratic leader said the soldiers bonus bill would receive a House Ways and Means Committee hearing after the tax bill is disposed of. The move signals early momentum for immediate full payment to veterans.

ANNAPOLIS February 10 Mrs Esther Sands missing wife of George H Sands returned to Annapolis after being arrested in Baltimore Chief of Police William Curry released her from custody saying no action would be taken Sands had reported a missed appointment and feared kidnapping Police traced her to a Baltimore rooming house where she was found with a man who identified himself as William O Sweeney of Baltimore He was later released
Police report a theft at Commercial Hotel on East Piccadilly Street where a night clerk Ben Snarr said a man in a light overcoat and dark hat rifled the cash register and took $3 while he was away from the office. The felon did not touch other bills.

State police across Pennsylvania and local units searched for elephants camels and two circus trucks from the Walter L Main Circus reported missing en route to Reading for the Humane Society of Berks County Dog and Pet Show. The vans left Winchester Virginia on Sunday morning bound for Reading while animal trainers Mr and Mrs John Wallace drove ahead. by Sunday night no word had been received about the missing animals or the trucks.

Winchester and Frederick county students show strong interest in Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd’s illustrated talk at Handley High School Auditorium at 3 30 pm on Wednesday February 24. A second evening lecture for the public will follow with proceeds split among local charities.
