A powerful early morning earthquake struck Southern California causing two deaths and widespread damage from Los Angeles to the San Fernando Valley. Buildings, highways and utilities were damaged while the Golden State Freeway closed and San Fernando Valley areas evacuated near the San Fernando Dam.
Israel expressed willingness to assist Egypt in clearing the Suez Canal blocked by sunken vessels since the 1967 war.
