County writer Hayfield urges a protective law to feed and defend quail and other birds from predators all year. Aimed at reducing losses from foxes hawks and hunting, the piece calls for bounties against foxes and hawks and praises a Byrd-led government for enacting wildlife protection.
The Friendship Fire Company will attend their annual sermon on Sunday night February 24 at Christ Episcopal Church. Rev. Robt. B. Nelson rector of Christ Church will preach. About 300 firefighters expected to march in a body with a prepared music program and reserved seating along the front of the church.
United States Senator E. D. Smith of South Carolina will be a principal speaker at the Rouss banquet of the Charley Rouss Fire Company on Thursday night at Water and Braddock streets. Rev Dr C A Freed arranged the invitation and Smith accepted to respond to one toast. Commander Richard E Byrd Jr of the Navy has tentatively agreed to respond to a toast, depending on schedule.
Richmond reports that Rockingham's lawmakers introduced proposals to restrict road bonds to voter approved amounts and to end the Commission on Hospitals. Senator Swank seeks to transfer duties to the State Agricultural Department and shift agricultural education oversight to W P S. Opposition surfaced in the House during a debate lasting about an hour.
Notices announce an important meeting of the Men of Christ Church at the Parish House tomorrow February 10 at 7 30 p m. The laymen will outline forward movement plans and organize mission study classes for Lent which begins next Wednesday.

In Romney West Virginia a jury convicts Charles L Vandevender of first degree murder for killing Ada Hammer during a revival. The case drew wide attention across West Virginia and Virginia with his young daughter pleading for mercy as the verdict is read. The jury recommends life imprisonment and a new trial motion follows.

The Senate urged President Coolidge to resolve the anthracite dispute but the White House reiterated a policy of non intervention. Coolidge said the Senate advice is not binding though he sees it as a valuable expression of opinion. The coal resolution was seen as time saving to focus on the tax bill. Senator Copeland pushed daily votes, delaying action. The White House seeks an end to the suspension but finds no federal remedy.
A Baltimore jury found Mrs. Julia Tyma not guilty by reason of insanity in the December shooting of Leopold Sandrakowski the St Casimir organist at church. Authorities say she planned to slay a lawyer before the incident. She will be committed to an insane asylum.

The Richmond League of Women Voters will hold a four session forum on successive Tuesdays starting February 1 0 46 at Teague Headquarters room 306 Grace Securities building in Richmond. Miss Elizabeth Pidgeon will teach citizenship education from the University of Virginia extension division and open enrollment to league members who register promptly. The program covers bills before the General Assembly with focus on tax equalization education opportunities and protective laws for women and child labor amid opposition to a blanket equal rights amendment.
Robt. Y. Conrad Post of the American Legion plans to mark about twenty to thirty historic sites in Winchester with temporary wooden markers this spring. The markers will briefly note each site history, with bronze replacements later if funds allow. Some locations are private residences, and owners have cooperated with the Legion. The project may involve the Winchester Historical Association for eventual permanent bronze tablets.

Harry Butler a 21 year old black man was convicted of assaulting Einora Steinmetz aged 12 and sentenced to death by hanging in the jail yard on February 26. Delaware National Guardsmen used tear gas to quell a crowded courtroom yard as two thousand people clamored outside. Butler is moved to New Castle workhouse near Wilmington without further incident.
The Firemen's Welfare Association and committee members from Winchester fire companies oppose a proposed alarm system routed through police headquarters. They argue for keeping fire and police departments separate and prefer existing bell and siren alarms with planned silent alerts for small fires. A protest plan will be presented to the City Council.

Robert Sherman and his mother-in-law Mrs Anna McKinney were fined 7 each in police court last night on a charge of disorderly conduct. Mrs McKinney learned a man was talking about her and went to his house with Sherman to deliver a rebuke. the man denied the accusation, and the court fined both.
