Prominent Winchester lawyer Harry R Kern’s wife dies after a long illness. Funeral arrangements expected in Winchester with burial details to follow.
Mrs Ann Brooke Kern, wife of prominent Winchester lawyer Harry R Kern and daughter of Thomas Cover Sr, died after a lengthy illness at 408 Fairmont Ave. The funeral will be 3 pm Monday at the family home with Rev Dr J T McFaden officiating. Interment in Mount Hebron. survivors include husband, daughter, son, and siblings.
All members not receiving a card for the Rouss banquet who have attended three meetings of the company from January 1 to December 31, 1923, report to secretary D. Brown, secretary.

A Roanoke Corporation Court grand jury returned true bills against Bailey Mayberry, a colored man, on charges of robbery from the person and malicious assault with intent to maim disfigure and kill. Mayberry, held in West Virginia on a housebreaking charge, is alleged to have shot former Roanoke Mayor Charles M. Broun on the night of November 11. Broun identified the suspect in West Virginia, and the attack occurred as Broun, returning to his home, was assaulted in an alley between Ninth and Tenth Avenues.
In Richmond on February 9 the Senate amended a bill on fair and bazaar games of chance. The amendment requires operators to give participants something of intrinsic value in addition to the prize. Opponents vow to push changes on the House floor. Church groups oppose the measure, arguing existing laws suffice and denouncing the bill as recreation for vice.
The Friendship Fire Company announces its annual bazar and carnival will open next Tuesday evening, the 12th, in the East Cork street hall and run for ten nights. A ladies committee and officers prepared final plans with strong donations from contributors. Suppers on the ground floor, with games and dancing on the second floor, are expected to draw large crowds.
The Strand theatre will screen Masters of Men, a sea life drama adapted by C Gratamy Baker from Mor Ak Robertson, next Thursday and Friday. Critics hail it as the most realistic motion picture of life at sea yet shown, drawing congratulations to managers Sanderson and Warren for booking the feature.

Frederick county supervisors voted to raise school tax rates from 22 to 43 cents per $100 of assessed value for 1924-25. The move responds to a $61,000 debt to the State Literary Fund and insufficient regular school funds to pay teachers and current expenses. The higher levy is expected to generate about $13,000 more.
The Louise Lawson case deepens as detectives recover part of her jewels from a repair shop, weakening the robbery motive. Police say apartment searches yield evidence supporting robbery, with memorandum books listing names and addresses of prominent people in New York and other cities.

Charles F. Headley state supervisor of game and fisheries for the western district of Virginia and Shenandoah county treasurer is killed when his car lurches forward into the Stonewall Mill mill race. A boy witnesses the accident and a nearby resident Dr. Artz helps retrieve the body but he drowns under the vehicle. Doctors fail to revive him after more than an hour. Headley was a popular county figure and will be buried in Edinburg after services at a local Christian church.
Weather bureau forecasts for the week starting Monday call for considerable cloudiness in the North and Middle Atlantic States with occasional rains and snows and frequent temperature swings.
Six newsboys and Arnol Voight, supervisor for the Milwaukee Journal, were killed when a passenger train struck the Journal company truck. The accident occurred near St. Francis after a party in Cudahy, with bodies scattered along 660 yards of track.
Separatists vacated the public buildings in Mayence today after a period of occupation. The evacuation was reportedly arranged with representatives of the former regime as officials entered from one side and the separatists departed from the other.
William H. Anderson, former New York Anti Saloon League state superintendent, was sentenced by Judge Tompkins for forgery in altering the league’s books. A certificate of reasonable doubt will be argued next Friday, with an appeal possible if refused.
In Frederick county circuit court an irregular attestation in John W. Bageant’s will led to summons of heirs and beneficiaries who agreed to probate. The will gave $200 to daughter Lillie Luttrell for services and equal shares to the children of Dora Borden. Luttrell and Stine qualified as executors with a $14,000 bond.
Memorial services for former President Woodrow Wilson, originally planned for Christ Church, will be held at 4 p.m. tomorrow at the Empire Theater due to crowd needs. The service will be led by Robert B. Nelson with music directed by Mrs. Frank Reynolds. Rev. Dr. F. T. McFaden will give the invocation and R. Gray Williams will deliver the principal address.
Judge Whiting presided in Frederick County Circuit Court over a case involving 1600 baby chicks six pigs and farm equipment tied to Burgner and former Handley Schools official Fred J Clerk who sought to protect his claim to the goods. The court ordered restitution of the property to Clerk and returned a Delco lighting plant to Stickley while piano dealer Le Rice lost his claim due to nonappearance.
Fire struck the Capon Springs Club house known as the annex in Capon Springs West Virginia on Thursday morning. Firefighters and villagers saved the main buildings after a three hour battle with flames reaching the second and third floors. Damages run into thousands.

Reports indicate Sheriff Cagle and terms of Herrin officials were held after miners seized the scene. Militia and deputies swarmed Herrin as authorities attempted to restrain the unrest and restore order. Police officers were placed under guard and state troops responded to the disturbance with reinforcement.
The Spice of 1928 stage production visits Cumberland for a two day engagement at the Empire Theatre with a large cast led by Georgie Price. The company features song and dance numbers and elaborate stage settings. Tickets go on sale at the Empire office and the show opens tonight at 8 15 p m with many noted performers in the lineup.
The Cardiff Evangelist announces revival meetings starting the night of February 10 at 7 30 P M. The gatherings will be held daily at 409 North Kent Center with singing and broad appeal. All are welcome.
