The Winchester city council approved installing a modern lighting system using nitrogen lamps over town and a White Way for business and residence districts. The meeting also authorized a $6000 note for current expenses from water and sewer taxes and passed the water and sewer tax ordinance for 1916 with amendments.
William County man Harry L Kurtz was found dead yesterday afternoon in a Baltimore rooming house where he had been staying five weeks. Coroner ruled natural causes. Kurtz, 45, taught himself languages, worked as a linotype operator for Baltimore papers, and was a member of Baltimore Typographical Union No. 12. His identified niece Mary Kurtz of Martinsburg was to be notified. His belongings were taken by police.
Banquet tickets for the Charley Rouse Fire Company are on sale at J. P. Sartelle’s store on North Main Street at 50 cents each. Demand is strong and supplies may sell out, so buyers should purchase promptly. The event, Friday at eight, celebrates the birthday of the late C. B. Rouss of New York and Winchester, with a cost over $1 per plate and a notable orchestra conducted by Miller Jenkins offering mostly new music after two weeks of rehearsal.
At closing time this afternoon No 2 red wheat on the spot traded around 1.31 1 3 dollars per bushel while corn was quoted near 80 1 2 cents.

John R Cooper aged citizen of Winchester died at his Washington and Amherst streets home shortly before 7 am. He was born in Strasburg in 1825 and spent seventy years in the city. A former tailor, he retired long ago and is survived by three sons, a daughter, and several grandchildren. Funeral at Grace Lutheran Church Friday at 3 pm with burial at Mount Hebron Cemetery.
The regular monthly meeting of the Teachers' Association will be held Saturday at 11 in the John Kerr School building. A short program accompanies the business session. Final arrangements for the school fair catalogue will be discussed. The association may finalize a uniform examination system to end the present session.

Wardensville West Virginia residents learn that Mr J H Wheaton and his wife Mrs Mary Wheaton died within hours of each other last Saturday at their Petersburg home Grip and pneumonia caused both deaths The Wheatons were longtime local figures Mr Wheaton served as postmaster during the first Cleveland administration Mrs Wheaton known as Miss Mary Didawick lived in the town most of her life They left many relatives and friends in Wardensville and vicinity
Senator Walter G. Mapp of Accomac county introduced a bill in the Virginia Senate to ban shipping ardent spirits into dry territory after November 1 1916 with local option elections allowed in districts cities or counties and limited import allowances per voter. The measure aligns with the Anti-Saloon League but its fate remains undecided and details on his stance were continued on page 5.
Washington Feb 9 Friends of Senator Thomas S Martin vigorously denied reports in the Virginia Legislature that he will not seek re election The 69 year old veteran is in good health and remains chairman of the appropriations committee He has not hinted at retirement and plans to run again when his term expires March 4 1919
Frederick County Colored Teachers Association outlined a May exhibit of industrial work from local schools with prizes. A $165 plano for Winchester colored school has $46.75 raised. The drama Home has its ties will be staged for the fund by local talent in late February. Contributions are requested to help cancel the debt. Public rental of a valuable limestone farm near Winchester advertised for 11 o'clock a m Saturday February 19 1916.
The first meeting of National Anniversary Week events by the Boy Scouts of Winchester was held in City Hall Auditorium. The program featured a parade led by the Citizens' Band, a flag oath, prayers, an address by City Solicitor R. Gray Williams, and the annual message from President C. D. Livingston. The week’s schedule includes troop meetings, literature distribution, flower distributions to the sick, a basketball game, and a service at Christ Protestant Episcopal Church.
The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad shows rushing business as tracks east and west are crowded with long heavy trains. A recent spell of cold weather hindered steam and delayed traffic at terminals, but today traffic moves freely and trainmen work at full pace.
