Forecasters warn of a severe winter storm sweeping Virginia with another icy blast of 15 inches expected, echoing bitter conditions across the region. The East and West report extreme cold and continued accumulation with little sign of a break, as communities brace for more weather disruptions.

Passengers were shaken but uninjured as investigators begin to probe the cause. The wreck left five cars off the rails and disrupted nearby lines.
The Examiner reports Alcatraz Island riot is far more serious than authorities indicated with Al Capone and George Kelly allegedly refusing to join. Two uprising leaders are on hunger strikes in solitary. Justice officials say Alcatraz is back to normal with inmates back at work.
Five convicts working in the chair factory at the state reformatory escaped today by seizing a truck in the stockade. They drove to the stockade gate, blasted the horn, and fled as the gate opened for guards at Guard C Ruble.

Richmond report notes Senator Russell Cather of Winchester and his wife host an annual Christmas ham and eggs feast. What began with a single dish for the couple grew into a large informal gathering of 45 guests, with a 20 pound ham and six dozen eggs shared on Christmas night.
The highway safety campaign runs in Winchester with 168 signatures collected so far. The effort, coordinated by the Chamber of Commerce Civic League and The Evening Star, included Girl Scouts in downtown stores and school activities at Handley School. Clubs and firemen supported a week of safety films shown at two theatres and by the Friendship Fire Company. George W. Garvin 63, postmaster at Boyce and Clarke County political figure, died this afternoon after a five day illness. He ran a grain elevator and feed business, appointed postmaster about a year ago. Survived by two sisters, Mrs. Charles A. Jones and Mrs. Frank Nelson. Funeral plans pending with more details to follow.
