The Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival committee asks Winchester Frederick and nearby counties residents to clip the pictured form in The Star, fill in their views on continuing the festival, and mail it back with a two cent stamp. Prompt action is encouraged.
Governor Peery unveils a ten point tax increase plan for public schools aiming to raise about 1 million dollars. Senator Cather opposes the program, backing Weaver's bill using a 2 million dollar deficit to fund school money for another biennium. House members delay action as debate continues and hearings set for next week.
A Capitol Greyhound Lines eastbound bus left a five foot embankment west of Romney West Virginia about 3 45 Tuesday morning. Nineteen passengers were aboard two were seriously injured four slightly injured and the rest escaped. In the hospital the injured received care as doctors noted burns from battery acid. The driver escaped with minor injuries and no serious casualties were reported. The group was later sent eastward on a special bus.
Charles H. Harper resigned from the City Council after about eight years of service. Fred L. Glaize Sr. announced the move at the meeting with no reason given. Harper cited long service and duties as his motive and noted his role in water costs cuts and the 1932 charter acquisition. No successor action was taken at the meeting.
James H. McAllister of Shenandoah City Page County an employee of Norfolk and Western Railway lost both feet in a yard accident at Front Royal at 10 35 this morning. He was hit by a north bound freight as he switched cars and had one foot severed while the other leg was mangled and amputated. He was taken to Memorial Hospital where doctors said his condition was satisfactory for the circumstances. He is 55, married with three children.
Frederick and Winchester fruit growers may apply through Fred Stine county agent for loans from the East Central Crop Production Control Association. The Baltimore based group, funded with 500000 in government money, will lend for fruit production in Virginia and nearby states. Mr Stine has full information and application details. his office is on the Frederick County Courthouse second floor.
Frederick County Court postponed all remaining criminal cases to the April term to free Judge Williams for Shenandoah National Park litigation. Two cases were tried with convictions. Jennings Hottle pleaded guilty to two counts of stealing and conspired, receiving 3½ years, plus fines. John O. Bailey was found guilty of DUI, sentenced to three months, fined $200, third drunken driving conviction, driver’s license revoked for three years. Foreman Roy P. Duvall led the jury on Bailey.
Richmond report notes Governor Peery will outline his school tax increase program before the General Assembly joint session. Washington items include predicted silver weight reductions, eight inquiries, air mail contract probe, and grand jury calls involving American Legion leaders. Foreign dispatches report Britain examining new disarmament proposals and Paris chaos with nights of violence, deaths, and Daladier cabinet ousted.

Bethel Lutheran Church in Albin Virginia hosts a chicken and oyster dinner on Friday February 9 from 12 to 9 pm. Tickets are 50 cents. Proceeds support church activities.
Admiral Louis M. Nurton will address the Boy Scout court of honor at the Handley Library on the eve of the event. He recently joined Shenandoah Area Council as an honorary member and is expected to discuss the origins of the Scout movement and life at Annapolis, sharing experiences from his Navy career. The open meeting invites Scouts from Berryville Front Royal Stephens City Middletown and Strasburg with several important awards to be presented.

Funeral services were held near Moorefield Hardy county West Virginia for Angus H Burch 52 owner and manager of a Bladensburg Maryland barbecue stand shot and killed during a Sunday robbery. The body was taken to Fabius near Moorefield where he was native. He died after emptying his gun at the bandits. He was a member of East Gate Lodge 216 A F and A Masons Cumberland Maryland. Survivors include his widow Effie Sellers Burch and three children Leonard H Francis and Dorothy Burch with six brothers listed.
The Friendship Fire Company will attend the annual sermon on Sunday evening February 18 at the Church of Christ on West Cork Street. Rev W L Dudley will preach and is chaplain of the company. A special musical program includes quartets from both the church and the fire company.

Mrs. Sarah C. Grim 89 wife of Isaac T. Grim longtime Refuge resident died at home after a short illness. Born November 18 1845 she married Grim on her birthday 64 years ago. Survived by husband five sons two daughters and two granddaughters funeral Friday at United Brethren Church Ridings Chapel with Rev H E Richardson officiating. Interment in church cemetery.
Winchester Concert Band will give the second winter concert Sunday at 3 PM in the Palace Theatre. Prof. W H McKiwee will direct a sacred program. admission is free with no offering.
The Grace Lutheran Church Men's Bible Class banquet will be in the church social room on West Boscawen Street at 7 30 tomorrow evening. Rev Dr Oscar Blackwelder of Washington DC will speak, returning by popular request. About 150 diners will be served with delegates from Martinsburg W Va Stephens City Alb Strasburg and Toms Brook Va.
The regular Common Council meeting was held last evening and the official report will not be released to the press until tomorrow morning. The Star has published only the official report for months at the Council’s request.
Washington reports eight federal inquiries and a Senate move to ease a large legislative jam. Roosevelts Seaway pact remains without ratification as leaders sidestep a vote while House committees seek expanded powers for probes into naval aviation profits and military contracts.
The Frederick County Fruit Growers' Association asks Winchester residents to destroy red cedars on their premises to protect apple orchards. County entomologist C N Willey has authority to cut cedars near orchards, but voluntary compliance is hoped. Work proceeds with few objections. only evergreen cedars require removal.
District Nurse Association to run a free clinic for crippled persons at its offices near the Court House on Saturday February 10. Dr. William T. Graham of Richmond will oversee sessions from 10 to 12:30 and 1 to 3:30. Registration by 2 p.m. is required. children with deformities are especially urged to attend.
French streets erupt as Daladier resigns and Barthou is named premier designate. Crowds clash with police in Place de la Concorde, with official death toll nine but unconfirmed reports of up to fifty killed and about one thousand injured. Soldiers and guards face enraged demonstrators, Marseillaise and tricolor flags appear amid chaotic scenes.
