In the Commonwealth a proposed measure would let cities and towns adopt by popular vote prohibitive enactments and bar shipments of alcohol beyond a quart per month. Prohibition forces plan to frame and offer the bill in the next few days as the dry answer. The item continues on page 5.
Funeral services for the late Mrs. Mary Schultz Miller widow of Dr Louis A Miller were held at her North Washington home at 3 p m with Rev Dr J H Lacy of the Presbyterian Church officiating The service was simple with hymns sung by the choir and attendees later accompanied the casket to Mount Hebron Cemetery Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers from Winchester Roanoke and local families are named.
The funeral for Mary Elien Cromer age listed as daughter of Rev. and Mrs. T. K. Cromer was conducted at their South Market street parsonage after a week with diphtheria. Rev. Dr. George S. Bowers led the services and burial followed in Mount Hebron Cemetery. The family plans spring removal to Loudoun County Virginia for final burial.
Federal Judge Landis dismissed the Federal Baseball League suit against organized baseball, ending the baseball war. The suit accused the National Commission of Sherman anti trust violations. Dismissal came on motion of the Federal League.
At market close in Baltimore, No. 2 red wheat on spot traded at 1 31 12 and corn at 80 cents. Mr and Mrs W R Lucas returned today from a visit to relatives and friends in Washington.
John Edward Teiper was charged with first degree murder in Buffalo New York after his mother and brother were killed while in a stranded car near the city. District Attorney Dudley accuses Teiper of killing his mother but does not specify the sister Grace's condition. Teiper was remanded to jail. Grace Teiper remains in grave condition.
The proposed merger of the Lackawanna and Cambria steel companies with Youngstown Sheet and Tube is declared off. Lackawanna president Mosés Taylor said the business had grown so much that officers preferred breaking off negotiations.
Reports from Philadelphia say Midvale Steel and Ordinance Company purchased Cambria Steel Company. Cambria stock reportedly sold for 81 dollars per share.
February Circuit Court convened at the Frederick County courthouse. A grand jury, chaired by Luther A. Huyett, heard Commonwealth Attorney T. R. Cather present charges against Ira D. Sanger for jail breaking and horse sale with a deed of trust. The jury did not indict by a 6 to 4 vote, needing seven. Sanger, captured in Urbanna and brought to Frederick, escaped during detention and remains at large. He had been indicted again for jail breaking.
Mr Wilmer Green manager of the elevator for William E Reed and Son at Summit Point was injured when a gasoline engine started while he oiled a new power corn shelter. His right hand was severely lacerated and partly amputated at Charlestown Hospital. Mr and Mrs Charles F Nelson of Capon Springs W Va arrived in town today.
Cosmo Hamilton an officer in the Royal Naval Air Service and noted dramatist and novelist will speak at the City Hall Auditorium on Monday February 21 at 8 30 about The Romance and Terror of Aerial Warfare. He guarded King George V at Sandringham and participated in the London Zeppelin raid. He is in America on furlough.
The Farmers and Merchants National Bank of Winchester started Saturday night hours from 6 to 9 for cashing checks making change and deposits. The move aims to aid country customers and those who arrive late on Saturdays and marks a first for Winchester banks to adopt such permanent weekend service.

Providence Rhode Island February 7 Mrs Elizabeth F Mohr was acquitted by a Superior Court jury of instigating the murder of her husband Dr C Franklin Mohr. Victor Brown and Henry Hames were found guilty. The verdict was reported at 6 07 p m and Mrs Mohr swooned as it was read.
Miss Mary Spottiswoode Buchanan and James Gustavus Whiteley urge aid for disabled Belgian soldiers in London. Contributions sent to Miss Buchanan at North Braddock Street Winchester will be forwarded to Secretary General Whiteley. Continued on page 5.
The Virginia State Senate adopted a resolution to investigate frequent changes of school books. Senator Harry Flood Byrd supported the move, while a partial report from the State Highway Commissioner was presented on government operations and spending. Additional copies of the report were ordered printed for public distribution.
News reports 700000 miners and railroad workers plan a strike led by Railroad Men's Union agents in Mobile Alabama. Radical elements among rail workers say combined power will force employers to grant wage increases.
Mrs Franceska Kaspar Law son presents a 8 P C A benefit recital at Presbyterian Sunday School Auditorium under Fort Loudoun Seminary auspices. The event occurs Tuesday February 18 at 8 o clock. Public patronage urged to aid the noble cause.
Mrs King Stone Miss Mamie Byrd and Miss Martha Bowles of Clarke county visited Washington to attend an entertainment Saturday night hosted by Mrs Horace G Davis at her Washington apartments. Miss Byrd plans to join her father E Wickham Byrd in Baltimore and stay the winter there.
The Wednesday night prayer meeting at the First Baptist Church will be conducted by Mr. I N Good. Also notices list a sale on Feb 17 involving N B Orndoff J R Mc Cauley at Rutherford farm near Winchester, with stock implements and household goods.
Four stockmen were killed and many cattle injured when a double header coal train crashed into the caboose of a stock train near Dunlap Iowa on the Northwestern Railroad. Twenty cars wrecked. In Vincennes Indiana two trainmen died when a Big Four passenger train derailed into the Wabash river after a river flood undermined a new fill.
Announcement reports the sale of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad station building store and adjoining dwelling and stock at Kernstown three miles south of Winchester. Harry Steele, formerly of Winchester and a Frederick county merchant, purchases from W B Smith of Kentucky for 3500 dollars cash. Steele will run the Kernstown store serve as B and O agent and postmaster. Smith plans for his future.
The funeral for Mrs Minnie Shearer Russell, formerly of this city and now of Clarke county, Virginia, took place at the family home on Senseney road near Cains Chapel. Rev. K. W. Brubaker led services of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. Interment followed at Mount Hebron Cemetery with pallbearers including Ose Ritter Robert Grim Henkel Carper Holmes Cadwallader and Tollitte.
A missionary service will be held at Christ Church tonight at 7 46 featuring views of Japan and the mission work. An offering will be taken and all are invited to attend.
Mr and Mrs Raleigh Colston Smith announce the engagement of Miss Lightfoot Sims to Stuart Gratian Christian of Richmond. Christian is son of Judge and Mrs George L Christian and part of the firm Christian Gordon and Christian. The wedding is set for late March or early April.
Frederick county will receive all back state-aid money that would revert to the general road fund under an agreement with H Y Byrd and Delegate J M M. The funds could be used on cheaper road types if the Byrd road bill passes the General Assembly, the Star reports in a letter from Mr Byrd.
Richmond debate confirms state highway funds totaling 65666 dollars remain for Frederick County in 1916. The money may be used for cheaper road improvements after the General Assembly adjourns, under an understanding with Coleman Steck and the state road fund.
The Sarah Zane Fire Company bazar at the Faulkner building on South Street ends tonight with an auction. A banquet for the ladies in charge runs from 7 to 8 30. Doors open at 8 30 with dancing and suppers to follow. Remaining items on the fancy table will be auctioned. Saturday receipts exceeded $200 and the total is expected to top $700.
Marvin Smithey a lawyer from Lawrenceville Brunswick County has bought the stock of R B Smythe and W J Showalter in the News Record Publishing Company. He already held a controlling interest. Showalter longtime editor has retired to join National Geographic Magazine as assistant editor in Washington. It is unclear if Smythe will stay with the Harrisonburg News Record.
The event runs tonight with doors opening after a banquet for ladies. Everyone is invited to attend.
