Winchester county Sunday school leaders convene in the Hotel Lane parlors for an executive meeting Saturday afternoon. Officers district chairmen and division superintendents were notified by secretary I M Good. A February 3 1917 session at 1 30 p.m at Hotel Evans is urged with invites extended to interested Sunday school workers.
Miss Lucille Anderson daughter of Afreana and Mrs Fréda Hainsomon is critically ill with diphtheria at her house on North Main Street. Her father Lieut Anderson with Company I Second Virginia Regiment near the border was telegraphed for today and expected to return home soon.
The condition of Mrs Charlies F Bailey who has pneumonia at her home on South Brad dock street is critical this afternoon. She has been unconscious most of the day and is growing weaker with little hope for recovery.
A marriage license was issued in Baltimore yesterday to Maynard Orndorff of Winchester and Marie Nalsey. The applicant, 88, is Mr Orndorff. The bride’s age is 28.
Shenandoah Valley National Bank selected Alten Myers of Winchester High School to attend the Farmers Winter Short Course in Blacksburg paying railway fare and tuition to support agricultural development. The bank chose from many applicants, sending the county youth to a respected training program. Charley Akotts Fire Co. holds a regular meeting to conduct important business.
A massive blast at a condemned apartment building on Fourteenth Street and nearby avenues left dozens dead and many missing. Fire crews battled gas explosions and freezing conditions as rescuers hunted for victims among the ruins.
A cold wave driven by strong winds grips the area and, per the Weather Bureau, will persist for several days. Temperatures range from 20 to 40 degrees below zero in the west, while Winchester sees 10 to 12 degrees above zero today and expects colder tonight.

On Monday February 5 Mr. Fred Richardson of the American City Bureau will meet Winchester men to discuss forming a chamber of commerce. The bureau promotes civic organizations and has helped create many across the United States including Fredericksburg with over 300 members. The Rowen Building in the city will host the meeting with Richardson ready to answer questions.
