ANNAPOLIS Md Feb 1 Argument on the appeal of State Senator Emory L Coblentz of Frederick was started before five of the eight judges of the Maryland Court of Appeals The court was asked to reverse the Allegany Circuit Court judgment convicting Coblentz of accepting deposits in Central Trust Company of Maryland of which he was president when he knew it to be insolvent He was sentenced to serve 18 as in the House of Correction.

Harrisburg coverage notes a Pinchot hosted dinner for Mrs. Roosevelt and 60 guests costing 2.72 dollars. Food bought from York Community Market fed 75, with per person costs of about five and a half cents for 50 and about three and a half cents for 75. Mrs Pinchot proposed the plan to showcase value and quality of community market food for the needy.

Harrisonburg Virginia February 1 John F Noll city superintendent of public works and chief of the Harrisonburg Fire Department is general chairman of the convention committee for entertaining the 47th annual session of the Virginia State Firemen s Association here in Harrisonburg He was named last night at a meeting of the convention committees chosen by Host Co 4 and Company No 1 L T Flick assistant cashier and trust officer of the First National Bank was elected treasurer and W S Braithwaite was named secretary of the convention ward J Lamb vice president of the Virginia State Firemen s Association was elected general chairman of the committee that will entertain the Virginia State Fire Chief s Association convention which will meet here at the same time The committee composed of five men from each fire company decided no further action would be taken until a committee was appointed from the Harrisonburg Chamber of Commerce who will meet with the committees from the two companies E R Lineweaver president of the Chamber suggested appointing active civic club members Rotary Kiwanis Lions possibly two others This committee and the two from Hose Co 4 and Co 1 will meet next Wednesday night in the council chamber They will propose chairmen for sub committees At the close members of both companies expressed satisfaction noting the election of two general chairmen as a step toward harmony
London, Feb. 1. Neville Chamberlain said Britain does not view the Washington debt conference as a great swapping deal. He warned England cannot return to the gold standard until it will work better than before. He outlined conditions: settle war debts, lower trade barriers, modify gold maldistribution, and resolve world political problems or make progress toward solutions.
A series of long running lawsuits filed by Esther May Lovett against Maurice and Harry Lovett have been settled by a court order from Judge Philip Williams. The order allocates funds from the Lovett partnership and estate, paying auditors and costs, and directs remaining sums to Harry L Lovett with specified payments to Maurice Lovett and to attorney Harrison and Harrison.
Miss Marianna Miller longtime Winchester resident dies at about 6 this morning at 28 South Loudoun street. Daughter of Godfrey S. and Marianna Miller she is survived by a sister Miss Margretta Miller. Pallbearers named include William C. Miller and several Drs Boyd Heist Henkel. Funeral details to be announced later.

Reports say Moonshine liquor prices in Frog Hollow Maryland have been cut to the bone as drought economic conditions bite. Rye whiskey sold wholesale at 1.50 a gallon, apple jack 3, blackberry and brandy 2, best ginger brandy 2.50, with moonshiners adapting to demand while facing intensified law enforcement including a recent seizure of 17,500 pounds of sugar and a 500 gallon copper still confiscation.
New York February 1 stocks opened weak on dividend news and unsettled trading prospects. United States Steel cut its preferred dividend to 50 cents breaking a historic 1.75, triggering selloffs with declines of 1 to 3 points overall. U S Steel common slid then recovered to 27 while Sterling opened at 3.3916 and call money held at 1 percent.
Tokyo reports Japan has dropped some objections to the League of Nations Manchuria conciliation formula and will submit new proposals. After cabinet talks and a report to the emperor Foreign Minister Uchida sent instructions to Geneva. The spokesman warned doubt about league acceptance and possible Japanese withdrawal, signaling a potentially altered organization if it leaves.
In Asuncion Paraguay a communist communique cites 927 Bolivian soldiers found dead near Fort Herrera Corrales and Nanawa as fighting rages in the Gran Chaco. Some fear the figure is inflated while observers warn the region wastes lives as the undeclared Bolivia Paraguay conflict escalates.
Funeral services for Edward Luther Smith, a well known Frederick County farmer, were held from Mt. Hope Chapel near Coal Mine at 2 o'clock this afternoon. Interment was in the family burial lot at the Lutheran Church cemetery near Opequon. A large number of friends and relatives attended, many from Warren and Shenandoah counties where he was well known.
The Winchester Lions Club ladies night at George Washington Hotel drew over 200 attendees from local and out-of-town clubs including Takoma Park and Romney. Guest speaker 8 A Hamilton of the Pennsylvania Railroad discussed present day railroad problems amid bus and truck competition. Charles Town Lions marked their second anniversary with attendees from both clubs. performances by Keystone Quartet and Handley High School Girls Glee Club complemented the program.

A 10 ton moving van loaded with Chattanooga furniture bound for White Plains New York burned on the Blue Ridge near Paris Virginia after gasoline spilled on a hot exhaust pipe. Fire destroyed the vehicle and most cargo. loss estimated over 5000 dollars. Crew and bystanders salvaged some furniture despite heavy smoke and flames. Vehicle owned by the Chattanooga Transportation Company.
Benjamin F Strawderman well known eastern Frederick County farmer died at 5 o clock this morning at his Red Bud road home after a long illness. He was 62 and a native of Needmore West Virginia, moved to Maryland years ago. Survived by widow formerly Miss Mary Teets, six sons Branson Bernie Lynn Curtis Alton Lee, four daughters Hilda Shoemaker Julia Nelson Minnie Strawderman and Dorothy Shoemaker, one brother Charles Strawderman, two sisters Sophia Miller and Victoria Miller. Funeral at Newdale Church Needmore Friday at 1 PM conducted by Rev Wheeler Walker with interment in Newdale Cemetery.

A Senate committee heard Daniel Willard say the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad halved its workforce over three years and faced bonds maturing in 1995 with no sinking fund. He called loans to railroads insane risk and urged caution on Reconstruction Finance Corp financing. The investigation probes bank loans used to cover railroad indebtedness and suggests larger banks should maintain funding to meet maturing loans.
Detroit Feb 1 Briggs Manufacturing plants were producing again but Ford said no reopening date for its plants. Ford had halted operations last Thursday after Briggs workers walked out, awaiting sufficient supply of automobile bodies. Officials reported rising applications and a forecast for a large force to resume work once Briggs reaches peak output.
