John Campbell one of three young men arrested on charges of stealing from parked cars was sentenced to six months in jail by Judge Donald L Weems Melvin Michael and Emmett Whitlock had earlier received sentences of eighteen and six months The trio was arrested last week after police reports of numerous cars looted on city streets Michael admitted his involvement and led to arrests of the others
The Handley Library will observe New Year’s Day and be closed tomorrow. Librarian C Vernon Eddy announced the holiday. The library opens tonight until 9 p m and will reopen Friday morning at 10 a m. All city banks will also be closed for the day.
George Long testified that his brother Frank Long shot him in the forehead on Christmas Day with a 22 caliber rifle. He said they were fooling and the gun was not loaded, a claim Frank supported before Judge Weems. George recovered from the headache and Frank was released from jail. the two boys were reportedly happy.
A large watch night meeting will be held this evening at John Mann Methodist Church from 10 p m to midnight to ring out the old year and greet 1931. Pastor Rev Horace A Johnson invites all ministers and people to attend and participate.
