In South Vietnam the Viet Cong downed three American helicopters as U.S. and South Vietnamese forces pressed 60 offensive operations despite a New Year cease-fire proclaimed by the Viet Cong. All three losses occurred before the cease-fire.
Paris AP With the peace conference stalled the Hanoi and U S negotiators expect no talks before year end and doubt progress until after President-elect Nixon takes office on January 20 The Vance Lau meetings proceed with staff-level work as casualties mount in Viet Cong attacks and a 72 hour cease fire is observed by the Viet Cong but not by South Vietnam and the United States.
The forecast calls for light snow late tonight then rain. Temperatures will rise tomorrow, bringing a high in the upper 40s to low 50s as the year ends.
Patton’s Furniture Sales announces curbside pickup for Christmas trees from December 30 to January 4. Trucks will collect trees in open beds if left on the curb with regular garbage during the designated one week, offering two collections for all residents to keep the regular schedule.

The U S Command will send five representatives to a second meeting with the Viet Cong near Saigon to pursue the release of three American prisoners of war. A cease fire corridor 2 kilometers wide will be observed from 6 a m to three hours after the talks, with no allied military action. The Viet Cong plan to send unarmed delegates, though no guarantee was given on prisoner release. The three prisoners are Spec 4 James W Brigham Deala Florida Spec 4 Thomas N Jones Lynnville Indiana and Pfc Donald G Smith Akron.
Christmas tree collection runs this week in Winchester by the City and the Teen Age Club. City residents should place stripped trees on curbs for regular garbage days and note no collection on New Year’s Day. City pickup shifts to Saturday. TAC will collect Wednesday 9 30 a m to 5 p m if trees are curbside.

Sen. Harry F. Byrd says U.S. combat deaths and wounds in Vietnam climbed in 1968, totaling about 14 500 killed and 92 500 wounded. He notes 1966 and 1967 combined deaths and wounds were lower and warns peace talks show little progress. He urges more troop relief and greater use of South Vietnamese forces.

Five Worcester teenagers died and five were injured when a homemade cabin in Indian Hill burned Sunday night. Ten youths were in the structure. authorities counted all as accounted for. Names tentatively identified include Ronald Vysniauskas 17 Warren Briggs 17 and Michael Foley 16. Harold Vysniauskas brother of Ronald was burned while trying to rescue him. Survivors said a gasoline stove explosion sparked the blaze. Firemen noted victims were likely thrown through walls of the wood building. Some survivors walked a mile to the road for help.
